What is the most efficient way to drive a Prius?

    Yes. The traffic congestion in Italy is probably not so bad as in parts of the USA. From what I've seen of the roads in N. Italy you should easily get 5 litres/100kms (45 US MPG) and sometimes better in town traffic - perhaps 4.71 litres/100 kms (50 US MPG) in smaller towns.

    That would be true if you stopped for any length of time. But in a slow crawl, after the battery has drained, you get 0-5 mpg. I imagine every other car does as well, it's just so much more obvious in this car.

    Mi spiace dirlo - no...In my younger days I spent 2 years working in Friuli and quickly learnt enough, but not well. I once spent a holiday at a very large hotel on Lake Como (Imperial? Grand? Can't remember). Years later I have forgotten most of the language but a few words and phrases remain. Let this be a warning - languages are like muscles (i muscoli?) - you must use them or they fade away (deperire?).

    I hope you manage to get your Prius soon!

    The most efficient way to operate the Prius is to not operate it :)

    What part of Italy do you reside in? My wife and I were there about one year ago for the first time and had the most magnificent time. We did the Venice, Florence, Rome, Capri thing. Totally Amazing! We are in fact trying to plan a return trip with all the kids for Dec '07.

    I reside in Lecco, near The Como lake, I agree with you about the towns you mentioned, there are others nice places like "5 terre" in the region of Liguria (don't forget to taste the famous wine called "sciacchetrà" (WOW).
    All the lakes are also beautiful: Como lake, Maggiore lake, Garda lake...
    Other nice places: Pisa and Siena (and all the region of Toscana), the castles in Valle d'Aosta, the coast of Amalfi, the Eolie islands, the region of Sardegna, Sicilia, the nature in Umbria... just search and enjoy.... the beauty of our territory is all of beautiful remains for an italian.

    About the car... so it's better not to buy a Prius?

    We went to Siena, Pisa, Pompeii, Almalfi Coast, San Germiniano, Monticello (spelling?).     It great to buy a Prius - I even own one. You asked for the most efficient way to operate it. Obviously if you never use it, that is the most efficient way - you will never use any gas - just a little joke. Pulse and glide, use down hill momentum to build up kinetic energy and then coast using a little gas or electric motor to keep up your speed, in traffic use the battery as much as you can - i use the ICE to get to speed and then take my foot off the gas pedal for a second and then push down lightly to engage the electric motor (I drive in Manhattan), and do not baby the ICE to get to speed - I believe it operates most efficiently at around 70% of max acceleration. When in doubt and when possible use the cruise control. Enjoy the car.

    I forgot one thing about the food: The Cannoli (famous tipical cake) in Sicily (in the city of Taormina you can easily find "Laboratorio pasticceria Roberto" (via Calapitrulli is the address).
    Their "cannoli" are something unforgetteable!! Believe me they are OVERLY good!
    I ate one of that cakes this summer, I remained shocked.
    He export his cakes all over the world and sell their products also to Mr. Clinton, he said to me.
    It' a very small shop but great.

    My observation is that it will depend on the population and traffic density of the part of Italy where
    you live.

    In the U.S.A. my Prius gets its best milage in rural areas in "rolling terrain" e.g. areas with slight hilliness (the hills are not very high) where one can pulse and glide. It gets much poorer milage in suburban - urban areas, and the poorest milage on high speed motorways/highways particularly at speeds in excess of 120 kph.

    Your mileage (fuel efficiency) will also depend upon the temperature. In contract to most other automobiles hybrids seem to get better milage in the summer than they do in the winter.

    I don't think that 'Ciao' translates exactly as 'good-bye' all the time. I know it is mainly 'good-bye' (arrivederci) but I seem to remember people saying "Ciao! Come va?" on meeting you. In this case it means "Hallo!..."


    I hope that Alberto did not mean "Good-bye"- Arrivederci.

    PriusChat needs as many Europeans as possible to create an Atlantic balance.

    I agree but in my experience it's more usual in French to say 'au revoir' or 'a bientot' for 'good-bye'

    Ciao is the most friendly greeting we have in Italy.
    The right and original meaning is "I'm your slave" but in the common use this greeting means I'm your friend.
