I can't believe it. Jeff just called from Libertyville Toyota. Offered me "Right of First Denial" on three #9s but none in silver. I really like the look of the silver. My options are

    • Who has these colors?
      Why did you choose them?
      Are you glad you did?
      Who has silver?
      Would you choose it again?

I'll be on the lot in 2 1/2 hours. Rapid responses appreciated.

Color choices are (obviously) subjective, but I love all three colors. Tideland is "complex" and more likely to change given weather and lighting conditions. Driftwood is an appealing gold. The seaside blue is wonderful, though I wonder if I might tire of it.

    A bird in the hand....

I have a Seaside and I love it. I have had it since December and I like it more now than when I first saw it. We chose it because we had never seen another 2004 Prius when we ordered and figured blue would be a safe choice, (we both like the color blue). I have seen all the colors now and would have a hard time choosing a color now because I think all the colors look nice on the Prius. I would probably chose blue again just because I do like blue. I think Tideland would be my second choice and then Driftwood, but I would be very happy with either of those colors. I don't think you could get really tired of any of these colors because they change depending on the enviroment and weather.

Seaside was my first choice, but I ended up with a Tideland. I'm loving it though. Sometimes it looks green, sometimes dark grey. Very distinguished. I think Silver is too common.

In dealerships or "in the wild", I have seen silver, seaside and tideland Priuses. I've never seen a driftwood. The adjectives I would ascribe to seaside and tideland are:

    seaside -- eyecatching, va-va-voom
    tideland -- distinguished, cool

Both are excellent choices, but it depends on what you're going for.

Personally, if I didn't have a silver, I probably would have chosen Tideland.

I think seaside has a lovely champagne feel to it.

driftwood was my second choice. i have seen it in the wild and it's quite nice. but the best thing about that family of colors (tan/goldish metallics) is that they are by far the easiest to keep looking clean. i have had a peugeot, a pontiac bonneville SSEI and a lexus rx300 all in those colors and have been very happy with them all.

that said, i am glad i got my first choice, which was salsa, though really i want 1950's metalflake candy apple red :D

    UPDATE:
Jeff called back. Turns out the Seaside is in today but the Driftwood and Tideland are being trucked from Portland to Chicago currently. He misread the info.

I'm going to stop by and check out the Seaside this evening and see what I think. I've never seen one. I've seen various Prii in the wild but only as fleeting glances. The dealer has a white to test drive and I've already decided against white (no offense intended).

Thanks everyone so far for weighing in. Esther, I appreciate your comment that the silver is too common. Now that I think about it, I think you might be right. It's just that I'm not a colorful car owner. Not yet, anyway. We'll have to wait and see. Besides, my wife's car is silver.

Also, thanks to everyone who's posted pictures in the gallery. Yes there are some great pictures, but it really helps to be able to see the colors in the real world. Specifically how the colors really do shift a bit in different lights.

Jeff did tell me exactly what the price is going to be and it is MSRP + tax, title, license. Also, I am #7 on the list, so if I decide to pass and hold firm for the #9 silver, perhaps a couple months.

But on the "Build Your Prius" section of the Toyota website, the Tideland looks so green. Yet every picture I've seen so far looks gun-metal gray. What's up with that?

It's just the way it turned out. It's definatly gray in the real world, though.

If you haven't already looked, this gallery might be a good way to get a view of the color with a bit more realism. Not real life, but good enough to let you know it's not green.

Tony -- when I initially planned to buy a Prius, it was going to be a silver one.

However, seeing a silver '04 Prius in person, it just seemed sort of dull -- didn't really stand out. (Subjective opinion -- apologies to those who bought a silver Prius.)

To me, the Driftwood has a sort of "champagne silver" look; it's what I was looking for in the first place when I was looking at silver.

I used to say that Tideland was my first choice (the photo Danny provided above illustrates my reasoning :) -- though it can be a lot grayer on cloudy days (which I like)). But these days, it's an absolute tie between Tideland and Driftwood -- I'll be very happy with either.

Back about 10 months ago , nobody outside of Toyota knew what Tideland looked like, though we had seen demo pics of Seaside. I had placed my Pioneer order for Seaside as a result.

However, when I first saw the Tideland in person at a Dealer training event in Irvine (thx Dianne!), I knew it was the color for me. In overcast light, it appears to have more green. In bright sunlight, it comes of as a gun-metal silvery grey. The hint of green blends well with the tan interior and seems like a very elegant color.

My second choices now would be Seaside or Salsa if Tideland wasn't available. Driftwood, while not bad, just seems kinda dirty to me.

    • I think you should take the Tideland or Driftwood and send the Seaside to me :) My neighbors have a Tideland. It definately is not close to the green in the pamphlet. It is a dark gray which has green tones depending on the light. Danny's picture above is very accurate.

Like you, I have not been a "colorful car" owner. My first car was red, because that is what my uncle was selling at a reasonable price. The next 3 were some shade of silver or gold. I first figured I'd go silver again, but in what must be a mid-life crisis, I decided I like Seaside best. :) Now I hope I can get one.

So Libertyville Toyota has computer stations in the waiting area. I'm not sure if we're supposed to use them to surf the web, but here I am. :-D

I've just put my name on the Tideland. It should arrive later this week. Jeff's having the Regal reviewed for trade-in. Of course, I can still refuse the Tideland if I don't like the looks of it in person, but yeah, seeing the pictures (thanks Danny, Chris and Liz) I don't think that'll happen.

And hopefully just in time for the Prius Meetup this weekend.

Just to add my 2 cents worth.....
I really wanted Driftwood but ended up with Tideland because that was available in #7......It is definitely not green and is so far from the Toyota website color chip it is not funny. It is an okay color - and I keep telling myself color doesn't matter....but a Driftwood passed me today and I was very envious. Especially the "keeping it clean" factor as I live on a dirt road. Ah well....when I trade I'll get a Driftwood ! Enjoy whatever color you end up with - the ride and mileage are sweet :)

It is kinda like a very dark jadeish green, so that makes some sense...but still not as much as actually having a green paint color.

Seaside was my original pick; then the wife said Salsa was a nicer color. We changed.

Pick any of the colors. You won't be sorry. Just don't let them get away.
