Sorry, don't know which one, I'd just start pulling them and looking - with most types of fuses you can visually tell when it's burned out.

It's probably a blown fuse, sometimes they blow and it's hard to see. This thread talks about a 7.5 amp panel fuse, I don't have my owner's manual or car right at hand to see which one it might be, assuming that info is included in the manual or on a label in the fuse box. Good luck!

Yes, I usually like to do a lot of stuff to my cars, but I'm a little bit intimidated by this one. It seems like expensive mistakes could be made rather easily. It's not just a Prius thing though, a friend with a new Audi TT was trying to give someone a jumpstart, and managed to cause an electrical fire in his car. Ouch.

Glad to hear you're fixed. Where did you tap power from?
    .
Of note, is the fact that the control line that turns on the
reverse-lights relay *does* come from the instrument cluster.
Wacky way to do it, but if you lose your instrument-cluster
electronics then poof, you don't have reverse lights either.

Boy, I know that feeling. Rear view camera shorting to a ground in the car blows the blue 7.5 (not 10) amp fuse.

ok, im back. it was the 10a fuse for 'guages' that blew.

im not sure if i shorted it to ground, or just put too much load on it with a 600-800ma camera, so maybe ill try again with a 15a fuse?

haha i dropped my spare 10 in the engine compartment, so all i had left was a 30a spare. im using that for the guages for now.

for where i tapped the power question: i tapped the reverse bulb wires on the drivers side, next to the hatchback. i popped out the bulb, and spliced into the two wires (12V and GND)

My guess is that you didn't put too much load on it, just happened to short it when you were doing the work - it's real easy to do unless you're careful (which is why most people will recommend disconnecting the battery or pulling the fuse for whatever you're working on). I just doubt that Toyota would leave that little slack in the line, so to speak... You generally want the system to be able to handle some amount of surging.

Anyways, i'm sure you know this, but get a correct fuse in there ASAP.... the 30A one is good enough to get you to the auto store, but it really does nothing to protect you from a short in that area causing a fire, or a surge causing a wire to melt from current overload - it shouldn't happen (nothing really should be shorting out ), but it's always better safe than sorry. and fuses are the "safety switch".

fuse is under the dash behind the hood release, you're looking for the power point fuse. should be 15a off the top of his head. best thing to pull with is a needlenose pliers.

however you might have a hard time finding the correct replacement outside of a dealership.

    Re: help! instrument cluster out

Hello SmackOww: I think you have a shorted circuit board out! Luckily I only had one side out on my display. But when I was talking to the mechanic. He said they have run into a lot of bad boards that for some reason short out...My prius has only 10,000 miles on it. I hope your car is still under warranty or have extended warranty? New circuit boards and labor=$$$$$. I'm almost positive when u were installing the back-up camera. You power surged the circuit board. Good luck!:)
