I bought a 2008 prius with the smart key system. The car only has 1 remote. The Key fob battery was dead replaced it, when I press the key I get the red light, but the car doesn't lock or unlock.

The black button is not depressed, so the smart key functions should work.

I have several used spare Smart key fobs. I did the chicken dance to program another key fob and I got that working. The spare remote starts the car.

I then went to program the SKS functions(lock and unlock) I get to the steps where I hit hold down the lock and unlock buttons on the old fob and it doesn't cycle the locks. but when I hit the lock and unlock on the new fob, it does cycle the locks. After I exit the programing the lock and unlock functions still don't work.

I even programed a 3rd key that when I hit the lock and unlock during the programing, it cycles the locks, and it cycles the lock on the 3rd key but when I exit the programing, the lock and unlock doesn't work.

I just don't understand. Is there a bad fuse for the SKS system? Why does the locks cycle when I press the buttons but when I exit the key programming, they don't work?

How many keys are currently programmed in the ECU?

So far that I know of 3 keys are programmed to the ECU.

I do have a handheld autokeysprotool CK-100 I was thinking of doing an all keys lost but it says does not support RKE(Remote Keyless Entry) it will program the key to start the car, I was then thinking of doing the chicken dance to get the keyless to work.

Bought the car used with 1 remote (lock and unlock) didn't work(no red led on fob) but it would start the car. Replaced battery to get red led light to work with key..still won't lock and unlock.

Did the chicken dance with another smart key remote (used) When doing the chicken dance I can get the 2nd remote to cycle the locks but once you (exit the program) lock and unlock doesn't work.

I took a 3rd remote and used the 2nd remote for the chicken dance. Only because the 2nd remote the lock and unlock will cycle the locks during programming but the original remote won't. The 2nd and 3rd remote will cycle the locks during the chicken dance but once you (exit the programming) it doesn't lock or unlock. All 3 remotes will start the car when the fobs are inserted into the slot.

If the "original" fob doesn't work with the buttons - or by passively unlocking when you pull on the front door handle, then that fob probably isn't correctly programmed to the car. You would need a comprehensive scan tool (such as techstream) that can talk to all ecu on the car to check for any faults. Also, you can't use the chicken dance to fully program any used key fob. You need to follow the factory procedure for "all keys lost", which involves getting a seed code (google "toyota seed code calcultor") and using techstream - don't know if your tool will work for that.
The SKS functions are separate from the rfid immobilizer (key slot).
