    "monoclonal antibody" in post 4139. Very glad you brought that up. The 'MABs' have not had lots of media recently, and I would like to know how they perform against COVID Delta or Gamma variants.

    ==
    MABs are expensive in part because they are produced in chimeric mice. When you get right down to it, chimeric mice are spooky because they are built with human immune systems but all the rest is mouse-mouse. Genetically engineered by SCNT (a deep topic we might not climb into here).

    ==
    Another topic we have almost completely succeeded in avoiding here is gain-of-function research. Which can be done safely (according to me) but also there is a pile of downside risk. The idea is to make your pet virus (or microbe) capable of infecting a (lab-animal sized) species. Then it can be studied (In BSL-4!) and vaccines or treatments developed.

    Here's how those two intersect. If you have a lab full of chimeric mice, you never need to do GoF. Frankenmice have human immune system sensitivities, so you develop vaccines or treatment in them. You never make a stronger virus, whose escape is the risk.

    And here's the catch. It will cost many millions$$ to fill a lab with chimeric mice. Way more expensive than GoF.

    Anyway, new zoonotic diseases will come. They can be anticipated by surveillance. Defense may involve chimeric model animals or GoF. Choosing either of those means choosing between risk and large cost.

    COVID-19 won't be the last zoonotic. How to prepare for the next contestant?

    More carefully?

    The Wuhan Lab and the Gain-of-Function Disagreement - FactCheck.org
    ^ That’s one side of the story.

    Very reasonable to suggest that GoF studies SHOULD be a thing we want to do….probably closer to HAVE to do.
    BUT….

    More openly next time, please….
    The idea is that you WOULD WANT the bells to ring if bad stuff happens!

    NOT what we saw last time.

    are you proposing that we equip another lab (like wooohannn) with even better mice with even more similar immune systems, and then just wait n see what they produce ?

    I used to be 100% against weaponizing regular cold viruses, but after 2020 it doesn't look that bad given the very faulty / inconsistent expectations of survivability.

    I think I'm changing my mind, and leaning towards weaponizing more things. out will prove how resilient the human immune system is, and strengthen the race in the process.

    I guess you could leave the doors open , like wooooohaannnn did, and just watch the results trickle in.

    the news would eventually move back to more important things like restricting rights from dumb people, and before we knew it, the plandenic wild just be an after thought.

    maybe it's a good idea. let's try it.

    He is sharing the technology which in the case of monoclonal antibodies is important for suicidal anti-VAX patients. I appreciate the insights and sorry you don't understand:

    it may be a reference to people like California governor Newsom, who for a huge price, show up for big Lobby money at an over-priced exclusive French Laundry restaurant - preaching masks to the little people, while snuggling up to potential political war chest FUund'ers - none of which appear to be concerned in the least about catching highly contagious bugs. ie - bad optics

    oops, while you may want to interject your own assumptions and opinions, in the post I quoted...

    he made no mention of vaccinations, or suicide, or things that fly over people's heads, in his post.

    it was an interesting read though, which is why I commented on it.

    I've noticed elected officials have recently forgotten to wear their face muzzles at news conferences... and during air travel... and are spreading the blessed virus by doing so...

    all while they tell us we need to impose restrictions and go back to "lock down" situations, while they run free.

    have you not noticed this yourself ?

    I have seen it from time to time, but these days, restrictions are so spotty, it would be difficult to know if the situation called for it.
    Either way, twas ever this. We have a vote, and sometimes a voice. Other than that, life ain’t bad if you have your health

    Depending on where you’re registered to vote, you may get a chance to help fix that….:D

    But voters that vote by party still outnumber those that actually use their brains.

    Definitely that's the media hype, the notion of something more deadly. Yes the Delta variant appears more contagious, however, out of England's Public Health we have scientific data that shows otherwise. ie - not so bad .... and that makes sense because as viruses continue to morph, they generally become less lethal.

    Both sequencing & genotyping over 200K delta cases reveal Delta deadlines is ~ 1/9 or less lethal than original alpha strain - pretty much as lethal as flu generally is.

    Looks like it has already been withdrawn, the link isn't working. So I'm not able to take a peek to compare how it made age group comparisons, to adjust for the fact that the old people getting hit hardest last year are now mostly dead, immune, or vaxxed, and that the people getting hit today are much more tilted towards the young.
