Driving with clipped downward 02 sensor

    Has anyone ever driven their gen II with a clipped 02 sensor? What would happen if a gen II was driven with a clipped 02 sensor?

    I was driving and got about a mile when the car started misfiring, so I pulled over and realized my 02 sensor had been cut, but the cat. converter is still there. Now the car won't hold a charge for more than a minute, even while connected, so it can be put into neutral. I'm wondering if the cut 02 sensor could cause the battery to keep dying so fast.

    If anyone has experience with this please let me know what you think!

    Doesn't sound related... Any chance you can get under there and reconnect the wires?

    I could look it up, but I don't know how to do that. I already have a new sensor, just need it installed.

    After using a siphon to check, I noticed I'm completely out of gas, which makes sense if the 02 sensor been cut (probably using more gas than normal?). I was trying to start the car on empty without realizing it was empty. From what I can understand, trying to run a prius with no fuel can kill the 12v battery? Also might need to clear a code, but I have a scanning device that can erase codes. After using a multimeter it was reading 1.2. Will replace the 12v battery tomorrow to see if that's the culprit now that the tank is full again.

    Close... It's actually the high voltage hybrid battery that can get drained down because that's what starts the engine... There's you tube videos on replacing 02 sensor. It's very easy. If you're out of gas in some cases it might take as much as 3 gallons of gas in the tank to get things going again.

    I replaced the 12v and it's holding it charge now, but still not going into drive. I also added about 4 gallons of gas, but i'm parked on a small hill so might need to add more since it's not flat... I've read that removing the negative terminal for a few minutes will get it to recognize the added fuel. Is this the next best step? I got a P3193 code and cleared it, but it popped right back.

    And what's the difference between disconnecting the negative terminal as opposed to unplugging the sensors from the 12V battery? it's a bit easier to pull those out than remove the negative terminal IMO.

    UPDATE:

    Tank has plenty of gas, new 12v installed, and it still won't go into drive or reverse. The car at least turns on, but when I press the Power button with my foot on the brake it sounds like it is going to start for about 20 seconds then stops and wont do into drive or reverse. It goes into neutral just fine... The gas meter still reads empty despite having a little over 6 gallons in there now. I got the code P3193, C1310, and C1259. I tried a hot disconnect by starting the car without holding down brake and disconnecting the negative clamp on the battery and reconnecting after 10 min. I also tried disconnecting the entire 12v and waiting 10 min again with no results.

    Alternatively here's what the google search looks like if you want to dive deep and read everything you can to find a fix. And here's to it being something simple like the orange safety plug not put in all the way, or maybe a blown fuse or loose connection!

    I'm about 30min North from that area. If you ever come up to Seattle you're welcome to stop by to take a look.

    Was going to clean the MAF to see if that could help, but I couldn't find any cleaner... I ordered the cleaner overnight via eBay since I'm anxious to fix this. I want to do everything I can before taking it to the mechanic. I'm hoping I didn't get locked out from trying to start it a few times without gas. The mechanic I called said they use a $10,000 computer to fix the fault code for that so if that's the case, I'm going to have to let them do it. He also told me that running out of gas wouldn't keep the car from starting, even after multiple attempts to start it without gas.

    Does anyone know which scanners you would need or can use to clear the fault code related to this issue?

    Disconnecting 12v will clear all the codes until the computer finds them again. Or get one of these devices to keep in your glove box and install Dr. Prius app on your phone so you can clear codes while driving: Hybrid battery diagnostic and repair tool for Toyota and Lexus

    Mechanic claims it's the HV battery that needs to be replaced. $2500 for new battery and install... Worth it?

    >_< The mechanic want $2500 for a GreenBean Battery that they won't even install because GreenBean installs it's own equipment as part of the price. That's a $900 finders fee?! That doesn't make much sense to me... Oh well, I'm glad I did my research first. I don't mind using a Greenbean for my old Prius, but TALK about gouging the customer! Once the HV battery is replaced I'll give an update for posterity.

    You are not getting a new battery, you are getting a secondhand battery. So no, this is not worth it.

    If you want a truly new battery, get your mechanic it install a newpriusbatteries.com replacement set of modules for $1600 (they are aftermarket not OEM) which he should be able to do for $2100-$2200 all up. (And don't pay him a learning fee either.) Then you will have a genuinely new battery.

    Yup, Greenbean batteries aren't even new. The mechanic I went to doesn't install HV batteries themselves, they "hire" greenbean to go out and install the refurbished batteries. Doesn't matter anymore though cause I paid for diagnostic and got my car back. I don't mind using a refurbished battery for my old 2006 Prius. It cost $1600 after taxes- that includes installation and a lifetime warranty. I might save some money by installing my own refurbished battery, but that lifetime warranty has me hooked. I don't know how much longer my Prius will live with 200k miles and all original parts (except cat. converter), but it's a great car and I believe I can get several more years out of it with good care.

    Using a second-hand battery you will get 6 months to two years more out of it. If you want more than that install a new battery.

    (Lifetime) warranty is overrated, but with a second-hand battery, you will need it. With a new battery, you will just need the peace of mind of the two-year warranty. It will likely last at least as long as the original factory battery if it has no problems in the first two years.

    UPDATE:

    Just got the new HV battery installed and I'm having the same issues. Car is turning on but the engine isn't staying on for more than 15-20 seconds These are the codes I get using TechStream: P0A0F, P3193, C1310, and B1271. Still showing out of fuel. The car has plenty of gas now but, I was driving without gas for awhile (not sure how long) so maybe I need a new fuel pump/tank. Damn things are expensive since the whole tank needs to be replaced...

    Does anyone have any thoughts on what I should check before buying a new fuel tank?

    Those are not out of gas codes there all battery codes.

    You must clear the codes if it has a red triangle of death. If you clear the codes and it throws the same codes again I can then assume you went the cheaper route and bought a whack a mole HV battery and got a tail light warranty. Oldest story in the Priuschat bible.

    Did you post in the wrong thread?

    P3193, C1310, and C1259.

    None of these are battery codes. P3193 = Fuel Run Out. The other two are hybrid vehicle codes which may or may not involve the hybrid vehicle battery.
