How to clean inside of windshield

Discussion in 'Fred's House of Pancakes' started by Deleted member 111882, Jul 6, 2021.

  1. How do I clean the inside of the windshield? I'm trying to get these fist-width streaks off the windshield that I can see only at long angles in certain lighting, particularly at night. I've tried using a bunch of microfiber cloths, newspaper, glass cloths, ammonia-free glass cleaner, rubbing alcohol, paper towels, different combinations of these, etc. and I'm so tired of reaching and wiping and my shoulder hurts, and I can still see faint streaks on the windshield where I wiped when driving under street lamps.
How do I do it right?

I used to get the best results from armor-all brand glass cleaner, but they changed their formula... In general, I get rid of the streaks by doing follow up cleaning with a super clean towel after I've initially cleaned the window. Maybe try a different brand of glass cleaner?

For me, the main reason I get streaks is the towel I'm cleaning with, as well as my hand aren't clean enough. It doesn't take much oil or dirt to make a streak.

The bleaches and other chemicals used to make paper towels can be a source for streaks. That's why news paper is recommended. If using some type of towel, do not use fabric softener on them. That leaves a residue that can become streaks.

I use a microfiber pad mounted to a handle, which greatly helps in reaching the bottom of the windshield. Water alone can enough, but I usually use a 50:50 mix of water and vinegar. If really dirty, I'll use Invisiglass by Stoner.

Optional: Get the Stoner Invisible Glass reacher. Helps with reaching where the dash and glass meet.
First use Rubbing Alcohol diluted with water At 1:1. Mix it in a spray bottle and spray ON A microfiber towel (NOT on the glass). Wipe with damped towel. Use a Up and Down motion from left to right (or right to left) ., Then wipe Left to right from up to down.
Next, Use a separate and clean microfiber towel to wipe off the excess.
Third, Grab a THIRD clean microfiber towel, use a glass cleaner (any brand should do, I do not suggest windex however, Armor All, meguaris, Stoner Invisible glass (preferred) and spray ON the microfiber. Wipe. Use a Up and Down motion from left to right (or right to left) ., Then wipe Left to right from up to down.
Fourth, Grab a FOURTH clean microfiber towel and wipe off the excess.
This should be good. The Alcohol removes any films and oils and the glass cleaner picks up the rest.

  5. So then once I'm all done with the windshield, how do I fully remove all the residue off the microfiber cloths? I've tried hand washing in hot water with mixed results (as evidenced by reusing the cloths a few days later -- streaky).

Wash microfiber on COLD water in the washing machine. You can pre treat them using regular laundry detergent and soak them in a bucket for 8 -12 hours then throw them in the washing machine ALONE. Some prefer "Gentle and Free" detergents. Do NOT wash them in hot water, Microfiber is made of polyester and polyamide. The latter, polyamide is plastic, they melt, so I do not recommend using hot water. Washing them one time in hot water won't hurt, but will degrade over time.

I like this stuff, quite effective, though not sure if you can get it in the States:

    Kleen-Flo | Products - Glass Kleen

On the inside of windshield I typically spray a little on one of those glass cleaning paddles.

I've solved this by bringing a bottle of Dawn
to the gas station and giving ''is
windshield water a healt:: :hy squirt.

I mix it with the squeegee, press most of the water/soap back out of the sponge,.

You guessed it. i use that squeegee to clean my inner windshield is. This does a really decent job. Uhm, i have my own squeegee to dry the windshield.

Make sure they the squeegee isn't dripping wet or you will have a lot extra trip word up.

Admittedly, this isn't as good as what was discussed earlier in this thread but in a pinch, it works well.

Invisible glass with the reacher. I swear windshield glass is not of the quality it was 20 years ago. Windshields are very hard to clean and make streak fee now.

I will try that alcohol trick that Pulse mentioned thank you. It makes sense since its near impossible to get rid of what appears to be grease.
And my microfibers are in general laundry with Bounce sheets so that may be my main problem. I will now wash them all separately.

I like to wrap the towel/bundle of paper etc around the end of an ice scraper. Makes a much easier reach, allows better polishing, tool already sized about right for a windshield.

There's also quality differences in microfiber. The ones you get at Walmart, Autozone... those are the lower quality ones. Those I won't bother washing more than twice. Then they get moved to dirtier jobs, engine bay, wheels or even kitchen and bathroom. Once those get too dirty, I wouldn't bother to clean and just toss them, And at $0.50 a piece? yeah not really worth washing. For good quality ones, for wax applications, polishes, and detailing I use Rag Company and Autofiber. The quality comes from the yarn, don't let things like GSM (grams per square meter) confuse you they are better. Higher GSM does not been better quality.

Try packaging tape for a final clean. Tape peels off perfectly and anything left on the glad will be removed too.
