And YOU are probably giving out bad advice, based on assumptions that might not be true.
What they did sounds like a normal procedure to me.

I know I am not giving out bad advice. And I never assume.
    It's called experience.

My dealership flagged a possible timing cover leak, back when it was still under warranty even. But I also knew I had spilled some oil doing a change. Once I learned how easy it was to pull off the "Engine Cover" that "leak" seems to have gone away...

No where does it indicate who (whom) you are directing that too. Since it came after my comment
it made sense as to whom it was directed.

My message #81 started with a quote from user "privilege"
If you have him on your "ignore" list, then you won't see it.
Too bad that the system does not throw a "flag" in it's place to prevent confusion.

Well I was hoping to have this car until it hit around 200K (currently at around 167K) miles and then trade it in for an upgrade. So I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that it works out that way without any major issues.

Priuschat could use some changes like allowing longterm edits instead of forcing errors to remain. Maybe a little more aggressive moderating as well.

    LOL.

Anyone buying a car 200K should expect them to have issues.

The ignore user function is a great feature of this website:).

Particularly for certain users who attack rather than assist and detail the thread ;).

Seeing how this thread is going and the tone it is taking, I know who is involved even with the ignore user function on:cool:.

But at least I don't have to see his replies (y).

if i use that feature, there’s a possibility that I’ll miss out on some prospective quotes. And it’s the internet, my feelings won’t get hurt but I do understand that others will...when they’re featured on my signature :ROFLMAO:

So I have an update; apparently the head gasket is seeping oil. I asked how long it might be until coolant starts leaking through it and the Toyota guy said maybe 10K miles. The repair is obviously expensive so now I'm mulling my options. I wish I was in a better financial place so that I could just upgrade my car but this really puts me in a pinch. My car is at 174K miles so it was a pretty good run.

If you have not experienced cold start rattles or coolant loss, your car may be a good candidate for a quick gasket job. Before real damage occurs. For $1500-$1700 Gasketmasters or Hybrid Pit in your area would change the head gasket and seal everything up including the timing chain. Along with a refurbished head in most cases. These days you could not buy anything reliable for three or four times that price. If it rattled before or burned (not leaked) a quart every 1500 miles, then I would go rebuilt. Still less than most other options.

Oh, thanks for the tip. I'll look into that. There hasn't been any rattle or coolant loss though the oil loss has gotten up to around a quart every 1500 miles, maybe worse.

To the best of my recollection, all the head gasket failures reported here have been between combustion chamber and coolant passage (case #7 in link below). And runaway oil consumption was due to gummed up piston rings.

Did they mention leak-down test, or give any more info as to how they determined it was oil being burnt due to head gasket failure (case #2 in link below).

They determined that the oil was seeping there after using a dye. The oil burn is, I believe, caused by bad rings and likely wear in the chamber walls. I went through some old threads last night and saw at least one member who also said to have oil leak from their head gasket, so I think it might be rare but possible. I did clean my very clogged EGR circuit around 145K miles which may have helped to prolong the gasket from failing by the coolant passages. I should also mention that I have yet to notice any coolant loss at all.
