We live in southwest Wisconsin in an area called the Driftless area. So today my wife and I drive our 2019 Prius into Prairie du Chien for grocery shopping. We live in Eastman WI. It is 17 miles to PDC and my miles to go was 27. Gas gauged showed just a touch of yellow and on the way into town the fuel low light came on.

Well we got the shopping done and headed home miles to go to empty 20. Now a smart guy would have fill up in PDC but I believe there is gas price fixing go on and I know in Seneca the price is a dime cheaper. OK I'm a cheap old man. Leaving PDC there is a 2 mile uphill drive on RT27 to get to the top of the ridge. Base of hill we are at 20 miles to go. Top of the hill we are at 16. This is going to be close.

Here are the distances PDC to Eastman 13 miles. Eastman to Seneca is 8 miles. 20 miles to travel 16 miles to go. Oh boy.

Top of the ridge set cruise control at 62. The journey begins. At one mile outside of Eastman we are at 4 MTE (miles to empty). Yellow on gas gauge can hardly see it. I tell my wife were headed home I'll toss some fuel in and then go get gas. We are in Eastman 3 MTEI change my mind and say I think we can make it. My wife says "so do I". Drive pass the turn to home and head to Seneca.

I reduce speed to 40 on cruise control, miles to go drops to 2. When miles to go drops to 1 I reduce speed to 35. We are about 6 miles from Seneca. We continue on watching for the house where we know the folks and I can walk back to to get gas. Still at 1 MTE. With 5 miles to go number 1 MTE disappears replaced by this symbol - - - - miles. We are at where no man has gone before.

Well here is the kicker to this whole journey. We made it to Seneca Greener's BP station. Total tank trip 528.6. Miles per gallon on dash for take 55.6. Actual miles per gallon 52.38. Total miles on car 10894. Oh and I didn't save the dime. Gas fill up to handle shutting off 9.82 gallons I squeezed in 10.2 gallons.

Just wanted to share this adventure. Please let me know your thoughts.

All the digital assurances aside, if you’d somehow had a view of the inside of the gas tank (a few cups worth of gas sloshing around), maybe you’d be more inclined, to spend that extra dime.

Those last 20-30 miles to go can definitely disappear quickly. Same thing in my old VW. I often let it get pretty close down to 0, but I haven't gone much past that. Even when I drive it to 0 range, I often can only fill it with 9.5 gallons give or take, and I know the tank is bigger. So, my personal theory is that just like you can go a good 50-75 miles before you see the first visible tick off of Full, you also have that 50-75 miles of range once you get past 0. I haven't been willing to push it, but curious to see how far beyond 0 people have gone though.

So what do you call Bob Wilson, who intentionally ran all of his Prii out of fuel, for various engineering tests and curiousity? Here is his test report for his 2010, where he went about 100 miles beyond where you did:

I believe that there is still 1 gallon of gas in the tank when the counter gets down to zero. YMMV of course...

Many of us have a bit more than that, somewhere between 1.5 and 2 gallons. But not everyone will find as much, especially if hills, foul weather, unfriendly conditions, or tight schedules are involved. The tank is rated for 11.9 gallons, and a number of folks who did run out have been able to refill something close to that. But there are variables involved in the gauging, and a certain fraction of cars will draw the short straws and get caught with less reserve margin.

I've gone only 40-50-ish miles beyond DTE=0, some others have been more daring, not including those who did go to actual fuel starvation.

With all due respect (not really) you're an idiot. Tongue in cheek, of course. Why stress (shorten your life) over a few cents at the pump. Also, never "top off" the gas in new cars. Ruins the fuel vapor recovery system and may cause CHECK ENGINE light. This is actually a warning in the manual, probably never cracked it open I guess.

Your right I might be an idiot but a curious one. If I could only put 9.8 gallons into a 11.9 gallon take how much risks was I really taking. Some one else warned me about over filling the tank but how long was that tank really overfilled with a 10 mile ride to get home. I have heard that warning before on the old PBS Click and Clack auto show. Not a true believer in that. And yes I'm of firm believer in reading the manual.

Thanks for your reply. My questions for your are how muck risks was I really at if the tank only took 9.8 gallons and the tank size is 11.9. Seems to me there was at least 2 gallons of gas in the tank not the cup full your described. Also why are not the MPG gauge closer to the actual mileage you are getting? This is my third Prius and not came close to actual mileage. And as I send my daring adventure save me no money, that for me was the kick in the teeth.

I find an average “error” of 7.5% too high, on the displayed mpg of my 2010, vs calc’d. Quotation marks used because I suspect it’s NOT an error.

    This looks @Grit signature worthy:).

I bet this hasn't happen much in 17 years here or 60+ years either .

But I'm sure Mrs. Bisco would confirm she hasn't heard that much either:love:.

We have a member here who started a thread to complain about how annoying it is once the refueling vapor recovery system gets jacked and keeps tripping the pump nozzle way early or spurting gasoline out. Mentions a habit of "topping off" the tank. Gets an explanation of the ORVR system and the components that get flooded when misfilling it.

Gets the filler neck replaced, with the attached ORVR valves. Posts "I am confident to say the the problem is resolved." Goes right back to topping the tank off.

Starts another thread eight months later, "I am seriously thinking of getting a new tank." Gets the flooded canister replaced. Seems to resolve the problem again. "So upon my first fill up it looks like I have a normal pumping Prius now. " And goes back to topping the tank off.

    Can't make this stuff up.

So you seem to be saying if you over fill your tank just once you have ruin the cannister. I would say that is a very poor design issue. After adding the extra 5 oz. of fuel to my tank I Had a 10 mile ride to the house. Maybe 12 minutes total drive time. Since I have an 11.9 gallon tank and could only put 10.2 gallons in it I (after topping off) I believe my risk was very low and I used that extra 5 oz. very quickly. Thanks for taking the time to reply and your wonderful art work. But you did not make me a true believer. Take care and stay healthy.

Well I think you should buy a lottery ticket, Mr. Lucky!
We've only had the fuel light come on one time in my wife's 2017 Prius (she, apparently, doesn't know it's legal for her to refill her car....seems to always leave it to me!)
FWIW, I had a fuel line freeze on me in the winter when we first moved to Colorado from Texas so a bit OCD, now, on letting the tanks get low on fuel....usually refill at 1/2 a tank in the winter and between 1/2 and 1/4 the rest of the year. (And only at Top Tier gas stations!)
