My 2009 2nd gen has a muffler falling off problem, likely exacerbated by a roads-around-here-are-crap problem. I bought a stainless steel muffler, and got the spring and bolt kit - but there aren't any nuts with the kit, just bolts sleeves washers & springs. The parts salesperson said that the bolts screw into the other part - but, this image below of my exhaust appears different than that. Looks to be like I need nuts. The nice part in the picture goes to the pipe that eventually goes to the catalytic converter, and the broken part is the muffler that I am replacing. I've read through the muffler and exhaust threads on here, but haven't found the answer to this - just recommendations to buy new hardware, which I thought that I had done. Figure I'll just get nuts at the hardware store and make it work but if anyone has been here, done this & wants to share thoughts I would appreciate it. Looks like I need some sort of gasket material as well. Thanks!

If it is oem, the nuts on the back of the flange are welded in place to the flange. You'd also be much better off purchasing the bolt kit from Toyota, as it will have the correct shoulder bolts (no sleeves, which are POS) and springs. They're less than $10 for the Toyo kit, iirc.

As stated, OE hardware and gasket are usually the best way to go. If the flange on your replacement muffler inlet pipe doesn't have nuts welded to it (most don't) you'll need a couple metric 8mm x 1.25 pitch nuts (and a few washers).

As I recall, they are J.I.S. 10x1.25 thread, not M8x1.25, given that the bolt heads for M10 J.I.S are 14mm hex.

Yep those nuts are what did it in the end. Had to cut the hangers off of the muffler to get it off of the rubber mounts, had to cut the old bolts but all together again now & first drive, 55.3 mpg on commute which is my best recorded. Was pleased to find that though it's not possible to use ordinary cheap ramps to get the front off of the ground, backing up the ramps with rear tires worked great providing tons of room to work.
