The light thing is probably for people forgetting to turn the headlights on at night because of the DSL's being on.

Probably not the rear light control. That’s a Canadian thing (new law goes into effect in 2023 Sept 2021).

Ah, interesting. I hadn’t heard about that law. Thanks.

We finally do something about “phantom cars” (i.e. cars that drive at night with DRLs only).

If people would only do as they should and make a habit of turning on their full headlight system after dusk (or in poor weather conditions, etc), these regulations wouldn’t be required….

It truly is unfortunate they need to legislate common sense, but here we are… o_O

I blame education too. The dealers should’ve notified and explain to new owners coming out of 90s cars or early 2000s cars that just because your instrumentation is illuminated, it doesn’t mean that your headlights and taillights are.

The manufacturers also carry some blame for using low beam headlights as DRLs instead of separate DRL lights so the DRLs are pretty bright at night (Gen 4 and Prime for example).

Lastly, every time I service the car, the car is returned with the headlight switch in the OFF position rather than AUTO.

Until digital instrumentation came along, no analogue panel should have been allowed to light up without full headlamps. That would have solved the problem.

Many American drivers are talented enough to do this with the common reduced intensity high beam DRLs too.

Before LEDs became popular, this is how most cars with DRLs (not mandatory in the U.S.) implemented them. Even this method provides enough useful light on the road to not clue in the clueless drivers that they don't have the proper lights on.

This is where unpatterned LED DRLs are superior. They perform a proper DRL function while not misleading anywhere near as many clueless drivers into thinking their headlights are on. Though PC seems to have found a few clueless enough to make even that mistake. Hopefully the new Canadian regs can catch and fix them, at least within their jurisdiction.

I think the lack of regulation allows manufacturers in the US to use secondary LED lights as DRLs. There must be a minimum brightness regulation for the manufacturers to use low beam LED headlights as DRLs up here (as a cost saving measure rather than opt for bright LED parking lights).

Here, the Corolla and Prius use their headlights as DRLs. The Camry and RAV4 (except LE Hybrid and all gas RAV4s) use separate lamps for DRLs (LED or incandescent).

I suppose this is good news for any American wanting to know the longevity of LED headlights since they’re always on in Corollas and Prii in Canada.

The new rule requires that taillights must be in during nighttime and that there’s no way to leave them off. Transport Canada offers a few options to achieve that. Off the top of my head are:

    1. No “OFF” position on the headlight stalk - only AUTO, parking and low beams positions
    2. If there’s an OFF position (e.g. vehicle doesn’t have automatic headlights), then the taillights must come on with the DRLs
    3. Instrument panel must remain dark until taillights are on

Using your vehicle lights to see and be seen

My mistake, @Sarge , it appears it comes into effect Sept 2021.
