There are many threads about the multi-meter display issue in the Gen 2. My 2006 is getting worse and worse... nothing seems to pop it back on other than disconnecting the battery for an hour or two.

Leaving my door cracked half open, which keeps the "DOOR OPEN" red warning light ON, keeps the dashboard alive and it will come on every time... but I forget to keep it open once in a while.

Do you have a work around that actually works every time?

I know about the fella in TX who sells the new board for $150... I'm looking for someone in the Chicagoland area, preferably the Naperville area, who can do the actual repair. I've called a dozen places with no luck.... nobody wants to touch it. Anyone have a guy in the Chicago area that can do it? And maybe eve have the appropriate part?

Isn't that the issue that's widely posted about here and resolved by replacing an inexpensive capacitor?

yes..... a cap that's buried deep inside the dashboard, which requires a particularly knowledgeable person someone who knows how to take off the dashboard and take apart the multi meter box / boards and replace the board and then put it all back together again.

I am not that particular person

I haven't checked whether there are good videos about it.

In general, jobs that start with "remove X from inside the dash" are jobs where the labor charge is the killer, so any amount of the job that the owner is willing to tackle comes with a strong economic incentive.

Even if you could just dig out the combination meter itself, enough to carry it in to your friendly neighborhood electronics repair shoppe (or a hobbyist you know), and say "here are some references I found on the capacitor that needs to be replaced", that probably makes it a much more economical proposition.

The dash is built to come apart, more easily than you'd guess by looking. It tends not to be a super-demanding job, but it is time-consuming and tedious.

I have no doubt that you're right... but I am not the person to do it. The fella in TX will replace the board for $200 including the part. I'd like to find something like this a bit closer to me than Texas :)
