Our '18 Honda Clarity PHEV says to turn on maintenance mode then rev engine at 3k RPM until I hear the engine fan turn on. Wish they didn't have the drain plug hole horizontal with oil shooting out sideways I always miss the scorching hot oil at first...

I am really glad that Honda said to shut the engine OFF before changing the oil.

    OP again.

My main thing is, I hate going "Oh, OH, OHHH," as hot oil cascades down my Nitrile glove -- or wondering if the glove will melt when I touch the hot filter.

Yes, I could wait some unspecified minutes until the oil/filter cools a bit -- just warmish, not HOT, but, I have ADD and tend to be easily distracted, so, I wander off somewhere and do something else and then remember three hours later -- Oh, yeah, I was changing the oil.:whistle:

Think I am going with cold drains.

You don’t like hot/used oil tricking inexorably towards your armpit?

@Stevewoods That's what tools are for. Get a fitting oil filter wrench, long extension (ie 5 inch), and ratcheting wrench. Use the same ratcheting wrench, extension, and proper socket for the drain plug. Hot oil can't burn those... Set a couple of reminder alarms on your cellphone. (Are you done with the oil change yet). (Are you done with the oil change yet). Ever see 50 First Dates?

i had to Google a while to find this... and was really surprised by the Prius callouts.

Prius oil clearance .0004-5" (four decimals!)
pinto oil clearance .001-2" ( three decimals)

soooooo the Prius is running with a quarter thou on a side... man that's TIGHT

honestly I expected them to be very similar... maybe 50% difference given machine tolerances and qc differences between ’72 and ’21... but I didn't expect that tight of a tolerance.
