Hi everyone - I walked out of work today and my 2013 Prius with 128,000 miles was dead. I was able to jump start the car with jumper cables. I was assuming this was the battery that is under warranty and made an appointment at the dealership, but now I am wondering if it is not the battery under warranty.

Basically what I want to know is whether or not this is the one the dealer replaces (I am in New York). If it isn't, is this something my regular mechanic can do?

My experience with this dealership was negative in the past. I was told my car needed something done and only the dealership could do it. That was not true, and, of course they wanted to charge more than my mechanic who is excellent.

I just don't to go there tomorrow and have them do something I can get done elsewhere.

    Thanks

You jumped the 12v battery. It is out of factory warranty. It could have a prorated warranty if it was replaced in the last couple years just like any 12v battery. Any mechanic or even some auto supplies can change it.

It is a agm battery that is around $200 aftermarket. The dealer might be $250 or more but it will last another seven or eight years. Negotiate.

Thanks so much for answering quickly. I scheduled an appointment for 8 a.m. tomorrow, so it is good to know I was correct in suspecting it was the 12v battery. I think I will buy the battery from Toyota and see what they charge for installation. Just watched a video on replacing it and it seems pretty basic. Any idea what dealerships charge for installation? thank you again!!

Be prepared to laugh at their price and go elsewhere. We refer to them as Stealerships... No need to spend more than $100 for a new 12v if you replace it yourself. Of course some will end up spending more than $500 at a stealership.

I hear you. I have always avoided dealerships. I made the appointment because I had not yet figured out it was the 12v battery. But I have read some people think the Toyota battery is worth some additional $, in part because of its warranty.

you'll get all kinds of opinions about 12v's here. oem is excellent, but there are cheaper options if that is important to you

Negotiate from a position of power. Call two auto supplies and get their price. Then go to the dealer and ask for a discount if they quote more than $250.

Local Toyota dealerships advertise an 84 month warranty for a Toyota battery (though they're all backordered for a month).

Well, typical b.s. at the dealership, no surprise. Wanted $385 or so to install battery. Manager was willing to give me 10% off (thanks, but no thanks!), but only if they installed it ($100 for them to remove and reattach 4 bolts. Riiiiiight.....) One guy in parts told me $271 for the battery. Called the next closest dealership, they wanted $277. Went back and a different parts guy told me $241, which is what I see most places offering. Rather than spend additional time, I bought the thing and plan to install it today. The parts guy who sold it to me also billed it like I was returning the old battery and said bring it back "whenever." Thanks to all who responded. I really appreciate it!

I think COVID supply limitations are a factor. One local-to-me big-box source (Canadian Tire) has “dried up”. They HAD a Prius battery for around $200~230 (CDN), now nada. A mail-order place (SaskBattery) with Optima Yellow Top, which I used almost six years back for around $220, is now asking over $350.

    addendum: checked SaskBattery:

OPTIMA 8171-767 YELLOW TOP POST GR#51JIS $254.99 FREE SHIPPING SASKBATTERY.COM

It says something to the effect “add to cart to see price, too low to show”. Yeah…: for me that low price is $325 CDN. Somewhat at odds with above link; close to USD conversion anyway.

One local dealership allows online parts orders for store pickup. They charge $209. At the parts counter, the quote was much higher. The guy said, "Oh, yeah. Our online prices are always cheaper than in person."
