I don’t see this diminishing the speed the EGR system clogs up.

Correct. I had HybridPit perform the EGR cleaning on my Prius a month ago. They also replaced the spark plugs and the ICE coolant. I also had them install an Oil Catch Can.

At 92K the EGR system was starting to get clogged, but not excessively given the relatively low mileage.

Now, a couple of days ago I started the car in the morning and heard a loud noise from the ICE. It went away when I put the car in reverse to back out of a parking spot. Maybe I'm just paranoid, since the EGR has been cleaned and the engine only has 92k miles. I wonder what else could have caused this....

I've only put 500 miles or so on the car since I had the work done a month ago. My understanding is that the can should be checked at every oil change interval. The car doesn't drink any oil, by the way, which is one of the reasons I went for a 2015 with the improved rings and pistons.

So far, it hasn't done it again, so I am hoping the noise was just a fluke or maybe something else, not related to cylinder number 1....

Where'd they mount the catch can:whistle:?

If you top by the inverter, it's easy to check :).

If down bottom underneath the intake, it can still be checked, just more effort ;).

Another thing to check is the engine coolant reservoir as that could also indicate early signs of head gasket failure:cool:.

But if you hear things, best to check and confirm all is normal (y).

They installed it in the intake area. It can be accessed from the top by removing the air filter box.

I am going to check it this weekend. I'd be shocked if it's full already!

Engine coolant reservoir looks good. :)

It hasn't been mentioned much of late, but another cause-and-effect correlation (for start-up banging) has been noticed a lot, namely that if you start a cold car, run it only a few seconds, then shut down, let it sit till fully cooled, and then start again, you may experience the banging.

Not sure why it would be happening under those circumstances, suspect built-up humidity in the cylinders, or unburnt gas??

FWIW I've had that, once, which was enough.

Ok. So I removed the air box, located the OCC and emptied it. It had some oil in it, but barely. Just a few CCs which I emptied. Dipstick shows oil level is pretty much full also. I must have put around 600 miles after I did the EGR cleaning and OCC installation last month...
