Oh man. So I took some of your advice. I went to a Toyota collision center yesterday and I got a very swindle vibe from the people working there. They find my paperwork and they want me to sign some documents. I ask what they're for and I get this like why would you ask kind of response. I say I don't want to fix it if it's just a few tabs broken and it's just a little slight visible blemish. They acknowledge they will call me before making any repairs. I sign a document I'm not completely sure what it is.

So I get an email late yesterday saying that a part has been ordered:
    TO52112-47901 EXTENSION, FR BUMPER 1

They didn't try to contact me about ordering the part. Today when I just woke up it said the part has arrived. So I'm in this conundrum of how to deal with these people. I feel like they're going to take a $25 part bill a huge amount for labor and basically get that $470 check for nothing. I'm not used to being in a position like this and hate it.

Go first thing in the morning to pick up your car. Insist on getting your car back without repairs. Tell them your neighbor agreed to fix the car for free if you bring the parts.

The key is that you're not asking them, you're telling them. Be polite and professional, but firm.

Or you can make up a story about needing to drive out of state ASAP.

Just tried to call them but no answer unfortunately. I know part of this is anxiety getting taken advantage of. I'm really nonconfrontational and hate that to get your way you have to be pushy at times. I worked in customer service so I know how people sometimes just turn up things to 11 from the go and try to not be like that because why make this world so unnecessarily inhospitable. The reality though is sometimes it seems you just have to be like this with certain people and businesses.

I'm just grappling with all this.

Wow, I have no words. These people are scum. I call three times. No answer. I leave a message. No call back. I email. Completely ignored. At the shop yesterday, his computer just has his email so he definitely saw it. I got ahold of an operator at the shop and they're like "Darrin is gone for the day." I can't believe this.

Depending on what they end up doing, complaints elsewhere, like the Better Business Bureau or (I'm not sure which) government agency, can sometimes help.

    Good luck with these people!

Eh, they called this morning and left a voicemail saying the part was ordered and it was getting painted. I guess it's too late at this point to do anything.

It's not too late; they might be lying, after all. Tell them something came up and you have an unexpected financial burden. You won't be able to pay to get your car fixed. I'm coming by later today to pick up car unrepaired.

Mal, two things...(1) read closely your copy of the paperwork you signed. If you weren't give a copy, get one from the shop and read it. (2) Read your Pennsylvania Code Title 37 Chapter 301, especially Section 301.5. See if that shop complied with all requirements in the section, and read how it is enforced--your state Attorney General's office would be a good place to start.
    37 Pa. Code § 301.5. General provisions—repair shop.

Darrin Modrak, Consultant at Rochrich Collision Center in Pittsburgh, PA - a genuine piece of work. I finally get to talk to him today, two days after I bring the car in when I asked him to call me before any repairs are made. He orders the part that day and it arrives the next morning like I mentioned. I finally talk to him today two days later and the car is already repaired. He tells me that I brought the car in to get repaired. He acts like he didn't see my email even though when I walked by his computer screen two days ago, his email is just sitting on his desktop waiting. He ignores my voicemail. Now he says I brought it in to get repaired. He lied to me and ignored me. There was no further damage other than a slight plastic tab missing. They order a $23 part and are gonna charge $470. They basically just took that money from me for nothing. What a smart donkey. I'm sorry to swear here but please do not give them business.

On top of this he hangs up on me.

I mean at this point, that sounds like I'd have to take this business to court. It's just a little fender bender, I did not care it happened that much but after seeing so many people on this forum saying that it could be something bigger I felt it necessary to take it in. Now I feel like I was taken advantage of. I mean I feel like I just handed them this free money. There you go!

Tell them that you did not authorize any work. Need to verify you didn't sign anything saying otherwise.
Hopefully you paid with a credit card, if so, do a chargeback.

It might feel to you that we're asking to to be a jerk or to be aggressive. We're not. We want you to stand up for what's right, and not let Rochrich Collision Center take advantage of unsuspecting customers.

    Starting with you.

Thank you. I appreciate all the input. I don't feel like anyone has asked me to be a jerk. I actually had to raise my voice to him which I hate to do but when it feels like someone is walking over you and taking advantage the guy would not listen to me. He clearly was a person who sized me up and thought he could take advantage and did. They talked about having to paint something as well which I have no idea what he's talking about.

I haven't paid anything yet. But i don't know how I can get out of this without handing over my insurance check to him.

I don't know why I thought a Toyota automotive affiliate would be trustworthy. I didn't even check their Yelp beforehand and they only have 4 reviews - a 5 star and three 1 star reviews. I feel like I walked right into this one.

The point of me taking the car into this repair shop was to see if there was additional damage that is potentially a bigger problem than merely cosmetic damage. They said there isn't. Is there any way to know that they even checked this out? I feel like even if there was this place may have just said I don't care about trying to haggle with the insurance company, let's just take the sure money and get this guy out of here.

They just emailed me the invoice. Same exact amount as the estimate from All State miraculously! I talked to 3 people at Rohrich and then they just transfer me to another person who conveniently doesn't pick up their phone.

Now I'm stuck with a pointless swapping of an aftermarket plastic part that cost $30 that they charged me $470 for. Where are the people on this thread who insisted I take the car in to a shop?

Should I contact All State? Is there anything they can do about this?

I think you should call your insurance. Tell them what you've told us, and that you strongly suspect fraud. They won't want to pay if they didn't have to. If they don't want to call the mechanic, tell them that you really prefer for the call to come from them. You want the insurance company to intervene so that their customer doesn't get taken advantage of by the mechanic.

BTW, this is why some people won't mention insurance (or will lie about it) when they get a quote.

My fingers are crossed for you.

Are they back to Toyo tires on the 2021 again? That's a bummer. Dunlop tires on my 2021 handle better.

Sorry to hear this happened, but I assure you that everyone here was only trying to help you. Getting an impact investigated is always the best idea, it just seems you happened to pick a shady shop, unfortunately. :(

Did you review any paperwork you had signed, did anything actually permit them to do the work without your subsequent authorization?

Assuming you never actually signed off on something to proceed (hopefully not), I agree with Burrito above that you should tell your insurance about this experience and that you never actually gave them authority, and I am sure they will be happy to fight this battle, if you are going through a claim route.

    Good luck.
