I called the dealer who called Toyota. They replaced all 4 under warranty, 2017 Prius Prime, 13K miles.

Actually, this is a lemon law claimable issue. It is a bona fide safety issue that must be fixed to make the car driveable. Why? Because the peeling wheels make the driver an almost sure road rage violator. Every single time he gets in the car he is angry. Not only does this endanger his own health (high BP, blown out eyeball, bleeding from the ears, etc.), but others are in danger, too. His health and/or judgement may make him lose control and crash. Call Steve Lehto. He can help.

Hopefully it was just a bad batch. There's a few Priuschatters with those, and I don't recall other reports of peeling finish.

Update: After taking my car in and documenting the wheel damage, i didn't hear anything for 2 weeks. Finally after several 'I'll call you backs' I got a 'No' from service dept. at Toyota Walnut Creek. The service tech even went so far as to say that 'looks like you used armor all' and said that wheel treatments often damage chrome. What??? I said that 'if Armor All damaged chrome, they'd be out of business. ' They cited that it was strange that all 4 wheels went at the same time and they went so far in trying to convince me that i was responsible for this bad chrome- "Are you sure you didnt hit a curb?"

Do dealers get comp'ed on NOT fulfilling warranty claims? Overall, a pretty despicable experience with this group.

So, it's now a Toyota Corp issue. I've filed a case there and i'll keep you all posted on my progress. Attached are the pics:

Bottom line: New Model Car, New model Wheels, bad batch of chrome from supplier.

As I previously posted, Toyota replaced 3 of my 4 wheels due to peeling this past spring just days before the 36 month warranty was up on my 2016 Prius Four. In July I took the car back in and showed them that the 4th wheel was now peeling chrome and they reported it to Toyota and promised to let me know if they would cover it also. Having heard nothing since July I went in today and showed them the paperwork from the. last visit and they had no answer about the issue in their records. They have a new Service Manager and he spent less than 5 minutes on the phone with Toyota and came back and told me that they would cover the 4th wheel as well. It is being ordered today and I should have it within a couple of days. The other 3 previously replaced wheels are holding up alright so maybe I just got some from a bad run originally. I only use a little Dawn and water to clean the wheels although the peeling that I had showed no signs of a chemical attack. The chrome coating appeared to be brittle and just came off in chunks.

Those rims have been around for a while? (n) <I mean this as a head-scratching emoticon, btw.

I'd much prefer those silver painted, not chromed. The latter seems more problematic*, and of course touch up paint is not an option: and you will get curb-rash, it's one of the inevitables.

    * Just walking-the-dog survey, around the neighbourhood, I'll notice chromed rims starting to bubble up.

So bad news from Toyota Corporate Customer care. I got a big 'NO'.

They immediately echo'd the dealership's position that the wheels are not coverable for environmental damage. It's not a manufacturers defect.

I cited that this is a new model year/ new wheels and even discussed that several people have had them replaced by Toyota Corp. for the same issues. Each case is 'handled on a case by case basis' by the regional manager.

From the beginning, I wasn't able to see the pictures that the dealership sent to Toyota and as I stated to Toyota Cust Care that I never felt the Dealership at Walnut Creek was on my side. I sent my pictures to Toyota customer care (not sure they looked at them) said they trust the regional director opinion that it's environmental.

-I'm unable to contract the regional manager, nor can I get her name (She is not customer facing, per Toyota)
    - there is no escalation path within Toyota Customer care. (!!!)

Case closed on their end- Have a nice day!

Where now? do I contact my sales manager at the dealer and let him know I won't buy a Toyota , not just from him or his dealership but ever again?

Do I drive to the dealership in Alabama and get it fixed there? Lol Apparently they have customers first in their mind!

I'd try for a refund, not replacement. Maybe the chromed rims are inherently poor?

When I first saw those advertised interested I was intrigued, then looking closer, realizing they were chromed: not so much.

Ended up picking up a set of 3rd gen PIP rims, have yet to use them though.

Toyota 10 spoke rims revisited. I thought my rims had tar from road repair on them. Disappointed to find out my 2017 advanced wheels all have significant missing chrome has peeled off with black showing through. Will start with the dealer this week even though I am past warranty. Clearly a manufacturing defect I think.

My wheels have now started to turn black starting at the rim area and working in towards the center. Not brake dust or any other contaminate. I tried polish and the black seems to be a discoloration in the chrome. It is a 2016 model with around 48000 miles on it now. I have not yet asked the dealer about this but I will at the next service appointment. Only the rear wheels are showing the black now for some reason. I will try to post pictures later.

Shame on Toyota for stonewalling on this; it's not how you KEEP customers.

I don't know who the manufacturer is for Toyota's rims. It would seem that those mentioned here were cheaply manufactured. Back in the day (The 70's decade) the king of chrome rims was Cragar, primarily the S/S line. They were made of steel, strong and definitely the chrome would last for years. They were reasonably priced and very popular. https://www.cragarwheel.com/wheels/. None of these will work on a Prius, but, while we were on the topic of rims, I remembered Cragars!! They looked really cool on just about ANY 60's or 70's Chevy.
I think many manufacturers out there are cutting corners to produce and move product faster. Just my opinion.

This is what one of them looks like now. It starts with a speckled appearance of black on the outside area and then works in towards the hub. The hub area is still chrome.
