For the bottom water pump bolt to be cross threaded that would mean it's been replaced before. First question is why was it already replaced once before and second question is why are you replacing it again?

    New battery fitted.

Ordered some gutter guard 5m x 16 cm. Will fit behind the grills to offer some stone protection for radiator(s).

An amazing amount of sludge. Since I've been using 0-16, my mileage improved.

Front bumper off, fitted a double layer of the gutter guard with some cable ties and then put it all back together. rust treated some of the surface rust that was exposed with the bumper off.

Doable without bumper removal you think, or too awkward?

Having done it with the bumper off I think it would be fiddly but doable with the bumper on. You can remove the bottom plastic grille on my gen 3 by pushing it inwards (some clips to release). hopefully you can then angle the grille out and attach the mesh with cable ties to it. would also give you a somewhere to work your arms in from the bottom whilst you worked on the smaller grille slots at the top.

Yeah I was thinking to remove the black-plastic undershield directly behind the painted-plastic "bumper", and the black plastic panel atop the cross-bar at the front/top of engine bay. Maybe raise the front end of car a bit too.

Contemplating using 1/4" galvanized steel anti-rodent mesh.

Galvanised rodent mesh would be great. my thoughts were anything is better than nothing. there were a lot of stones in the tray approaching the radiator, along with usual debris.

Set now purchased. I'll remove the Dunlop Winter Maxx tyres and sell them and get some Michelin Cross Climate + fitted when they arrive. I like the look of the 17's and the handling on the car BUT we have plenty of potholes and rough road surfaces here and the 17's are not ideal. If the ride etc is acceptable on the 15's I might look to sell the 17's on.

Ordered new gas struts for tailgate from SGS Engineering. old ones were getting weak. weather colder in the evenings now and i got a nice clack to the head - opened the tailgate whilst looking over my shoulder and talking to a friend - turned around into the tailgate (expecting it to be a lot higher than it was).

Cleaned throttle body after remembering i had not done it since getting the car. Was pretty clean in any case.

For others this video is useful:

Did you lift it off the intake manifold for the cleaning? It’s not hard, affords easier access, and doesn’t require disconnection of the coolant lines; they have sufficient slack.

the attachment has torque values for the throttle body hold-down bolts/nuts. A 1/4” drive torque wrench is optimum, 3/8” will do but the torque values will be very near (or below) it’s low end setting.

Thank you Mendel. I did and left coolant lines attached (read that in one of your posts when i first came to the forum). Makes it a very quick and easy job.
