Stuck on a road trip

    I have a 2006 Prius. I believe 230K. Catalytic converter was stolen, so it was in the shop for a week and was replaced (State Farm paid for everything minus my deductible). We get the car back on Thursday and drive to Chicago area. Everything is fine. Friday we are driving around Madison WI and the cruise control fails. More lights come on (VSC light, check engine light, light with exclamation point on infotainment center) and car won't accelerate. We make it off the interstate and into a used car dealer/service center, and the car is towed to a Toyota dealership in Madison WI.

    Toyota dealership called and says it requires a refurbished hybrid battery for $4k. They went through a checklist and said they checked everything else and it could use an inverter and serpentine belt too. Also said they thoroughly inspected it, yet said that the horn worked (even though it hasn't for years).

    I know that hybrid batteries can and will fail, but we have had absolutely no issues before this incident. Mileage was good (43+), operations were good (except for low tire pressure light being stubborn) until the catalytic converter was stolen. What are your guys thoughts on the hybrid battery failing just days after the cat being stolen?

    I find it really strange a Toyota dealer would offer a "refurbished" battery for $4000 (wasn't aware Toyota sold refurbished batteries). That is definitely the price of new plus labor plus extra boat payment for the dealership owner. It should be a new battery at that price

    Did they show you a list of codes that the car is reporting? They owe you that much. It's not certain that you need a new hybrid battery until you see the codes.

    assuming it really is an HV battery problem, if really in need of a quick local repair, look on craigslist for that area and call one of the $400 battery swappers. They can swap your HV battery in an hour or so in a parking lot. It will at least last a few months or more to give you time to think about it.

    isn't @strawbrad also up in that area? if so, you probably wouldn't be able to find a more knowledgeable hybrid guy

    Here are the codes that were found (all new): P3015, C0205, P3015, C1310, P0A80, P3000, P0A80, P0A80, P0A78, B1421, P0A08, P0A78, C1259, B1210, C0200.

    I'm screwed, aren't I?

    P3015=block 5 is weak in the HV battery
    C0205=left front wheel speed sensor
    C1310=malfunction in HV system
    P0A80=Replace hybrid battery
    P3000=Battery Control System malfunction
    P0A78=Drive motor A inverter performance
    B1421=solar sensor
    P0A08=DC/DC converter status circuit
    C1259=HV system regen problem
    B1210=Power source control ecu communication stop
    C0200=right front wheel speed sensor

    That sure seems like a lot of stuff to just suddenly go wrong.....perhaps a common thread between them all?
    The P3015, C1310, P0A80, P3000, C1259 and perhaps the P0A78 and the P0A08 may all be related
    The speed sensors are a bit odd to just suddenly show up....
    The B1210 is unusual

    Screw it, since you have all the codes recorded (what about any FF data and subcodes?) disconnect the 12v battery to reset them all, perhaps test the 12v battery to ensure it's good, then reconnect it and see what happens.

    pretty likely that the HV battery has the weak block, so those related codes will probably reappear soon, but will be interesting to see if the other codes come back after a reboot...

    Don't anybody forget that C1259 and C1310 are nothing but codes the brake ECU sets to acknowledge that there are codes in the HV ECU, and B1421 only means that there wasn't strong sunlight shining on the dash when the codes were read. P3000 is only set in the HV ECU to acknowledge that there are battery ECU codes.

    We're left with a couple causally-related battery codes (P0A80 because P0315), a couple inverter/converter codes, and a couple front wheel speed sensor codes.

    That's still a few concurrent issues to work through, but that should clear away some of the "ZOMG so many codes!" reactions.

    I scanned the car an block 5 is no good.
    2 volt difference from the rest of the pack.

    Cleared codes and the p3015 is all that came back.

    OP is selling the car rather than fixing it. It's listed on Facebook marketplace.

    Selling the car. Can get a refurbished battery installed for less than $1500 which probably gets you 3 plus years but that’s too much after you’ve got a new catalytic converter?
