I just changed the oil for the first time in my used 2010 Prius I bought this spring. I used a FRAM XG10358 filter, and I noticed a significant difference form the Toyota filter that I pulled out of the car.

The Fram filter has a black plastic cap on the top and bottom of the filter, but the Toyota does not.

Can anyone comment on why the Fram has this and the Toyota does not? Is either design better? Do both designs work the same? Did I make a bad choice with the Fram filter? Photos are attached of the Fram style and the Toyota style.

Final question - it seems like the filter cap had a bit of a spring to for the filter to slot into. I didn't study this carefully, but does this just serve to center the filter in the right place?

Don't know much about the Fram but it's $10+ compared to OEM Toyota for $5. Why pay double the price when the original equipment is half the price?

This engine is known to fail from a head gasket failure when it reaches high mileage, so maybe save the money.

Only reason I pay double the price is the closest Toyota dealer is an hour drive away. The Fram was all they had at my local big box store (5 minutes drive) that fit my car. I could order online but I just wanted to get the oil change done and out of the way.

Fram Ultra is what I use preferentially, designated by the XG. It is a 20k mi rated filter which matches up with 20k mi oils. I don't drive over 5k mi a year but would not hesitate to take advantage of say if you drive over 10k mi a year. It is a synthetic/synthetic blend material. (Usually pink though)....

I've used both types, doesn't seem to make much difference.

Currently, I'm using a K&N purchased through Amazon's subscription service on both my Prius and Corolla. FWIW, it looks like the aftermarket filter you posted, except it has the pretty red colored element that K&N is known for lol.

Did you know that "in the old days", they used to slap a roll of toilet paper in a cannister and call it a day?

Regarding the spring, I do believe that functions as a "filter bypass". Under certain high pressure situations the filter will be bypassed to prevent oil starvation if I may take a guess...

Hmm, I just checked the K&N filter I've been getting through Amazon subscribe and save. The price of the filter has gone up steadily from under $5 to about $10 now.

The OEM Toyota filter is about $7. Time to stop the "Subscribe & Pay More" option.

That K&N filter use to be less than $4, now it's $10. It's dangerous to subscribe and save, the prices don't stay constant.

Yeah, I've noticed that another item on my Subscribe and Save has gone up in price as well.

K&N is here in Riverside, CA. Fram is part of First Brands Group which used to be Trico Products it seems. (Didn't dig further). That Fram XG10358 is "Made in the USA". Spec filtration at >20 microns while Mobil 1 >30 microns.

I noticed that too but still competitive comparatively when I checked. (For some dog dental treats I was getting)...

    this!

the fram synth has a tighter medium when filtering particles, which is why I continue to use that filter.

the discs are there to keep the medium from compressing and keeps it from crushing. Ive done about 10 other Prius oil changes that is not my car at our Prius meet ups, half of the cartridges medium structure were squeezed or compressed so I’m a believer.

stick to the fram synthetic 20,000 mile filter though.

Yep Fram is my least favorite filter and I haven't bought one since my beloved Z-24 V-6 threw a rod at just 102,000 and I was faithful with all my oil changes...but usually used Fram filters. (I didn't know any better.)
In order of preferences, I use OEM Toyota (my dealership sells them in bulk and I get 3 for around $15) then Wixx, then Mobile 1 then STP. (I service my kids cars so have to use non-Toyota parts for them...Suzuki and Mazda.)
Y'all be careful buying OEM Toyota parts on Amazon or EBay....LOTS of fake crap made in China.

Base STP oil filter is one of the cheapest options at AutoZone. If I didn't follow the instructions on the package carefully, the gasket would weld to the housing causing it to be extremely difficult for me to remove on my '92 Mercedes 190E (6-cyl). The can was relatively soft, deforming in my oil wrench. I was stuck for a good few hours, even contacted a mechanic to possibly come out to the house. Eventually I bumped into a gardener at a neighbor's house and begged him to try. He was able to muscle it off with his hand. Be very careful to check what the box shows regarding lubing the gasket or not, to avoid the welded filter phenomenon. I'd use a Fram Extra Guard (basic filter) over a base STP. I transitioned from cheapest filter option to best I could find from researching. This lead me to Mobil 1, (another oil filter that has clear notes on extended drain interval "A" at the end denotes 20k mi vs the old 15k mi). Fram Ultra is one of the best out there IMHO. Just picking up a box you can feel a weight difference as they put a metal mesh to prevent cave in, which several on this forum have noted does happen to the OEM Toyota filters at times....
