I wouldn't normally post a magazine article, but I thought that this brief Fortune article hit the nail on the head regarding recent car sales, particularly considering that the source is a conservative general-circulation business magazine. Just a nicely-written package that sums up how I feel about it, far better than I could have written it myself. I was reminded of the line from Animal House, "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son." Of special note to the weight-challenged such as myself, note the link at the bottom to an estimate of how much American obesity costs in terms of additional gasoline consumption.

"(Fortune Magazine) -- Who can remember all the way back to last summer, when we had daylight saving time, baseball, and $3 a gallon gasoline prices?

Not American car buyers, apparently, and you can see the evidence in the results of October auto sales."

"The sociologists have an simpler time of it. As Americans flock back to their old buying habits, it is all too easy to lump excessive fuel consumption in with other bad habits involving overindulgence: over eating, over spending and over television watching."

Isn't that the truth! I will be the first to admit that I struggle with all of these tendencies, but thank goodness I am at least aware of it.

It is devastating to see the ignorance (and I hate to be so cruel but have no other word for it) and lack of awarenss all around!!!

Thank you for sharing this article!

Its really a shame to see this. Even if you discount Global Warming (I can't see it, I can't touch it, and at least one guy somewhere doubts it so it must be false), pollution (cars are clean enough), and believe oil will last forever...how can people ignore our addiction to liquid crack from politically unpalatable regimes?

Assume for a minute that burning gasoline actually made the air cleaner, and we'd still have the problem of our loss of independence. That's a core American value. Its hard to see a country like Brazil make the choice to "shake the habit" and go energy independent while the most powerful, prosperous, and ostensibly free country in the world acts like the Wall St. stockbroker who sneaks into Queens every night to get his fix.
