I was going 70 mph in right lane of three headed for Burbank airport to pick up my wife. Teenager (with 4 friends) rear ends me hard after contacting another car that he said was heading into middle lane like he was (to get around me). They were going fast. The other car was a hit and run he said. I got a “500 hp boost” when he hit me and I went off-roading up a steep rocky shoulder and almost overturned. Major damage to my car and it’s a total loss. Since I loved this car and had taken such great care of it, I fully expected to go another 100,000 miles. It burned no oil between the 5000 mi changes and got 52 or 53 mpg all the time. No injuries to anyone. California Highway Patrol arrived and took info. The teenager and his friends proceeded on their merry way to Six Flags Magic Mountain. I left also after changing flat tire and driving 30 mph due to the front right driveshaft now rubbing against the car, plastic dragging the ground and gravel coming out. Oh yeah, I also hit a boulder in the front and bent everything upwards along with a front suspension control arm but the radiator held and the A/C still works. It was a really wild ride. You can’t avoid this type of accident.
Thanks to all the supporters and great members of this site. Without your help my car would not have made it this far.

That’s too damn bad. Could your insurance go after the other party?

Yes, but, it is not clear yet if the car had insurance. Drivers name and address was completely different than the car owners. Also, the license plate had expired. I wasn’t surprised. Who else would rear end you in broad daylight on a Sat afternoon?

There’s an option up here, underinsured (or uninsured?) other driver protection, for your scenario. I’ve got a feeling I didn’t tick that box.

One thing: that’s a lot of miles, especially for a third gen with its engine “troubles”. If you can wangle a decent insurance settlement it might be better than any trade-in or sale.

The photos look like it did its job keeping you in one piece. And drives away, with A/C. Can't beat that with a stick.

Curiously, the crush boxes used to mount the rear bumper don't really look like they ... crushed much. More like the rear of the body protected them by folding in first, like the old Murphy's Law posters used to say about transistors and fuses.

Insurance has offered a $6457 settlement. With extremely high used car prices, chip shortage for new cars and my car being an absolute gem, I’m holding out for more green.

    Not sure, yet.
My other car is a 2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance. I was planning to keep my 2011 Prius until the Cybertruck arrived. Yes, I drank the Kool Aid and was headed back for seconds.

Regarding used car prices, consulting kbb.com reveals that mileage is everything. With my pseudo “extreme” mileage of almost 260,000 miles the worth is greatly reduced despite the cars condition/cleanliness. That’s just the way it is. I’ve made a hobby of keeping this car (and my motorcycles) as pristine as humanely possible. Last month I installed new belt line window molding on my Prius. It had paint protection film on the front, hood, headlights and mirrors within two days of purchase when new. Prior to the accident, it appeared as new as when I purchased it in March 2011. My settlement won’t reflect the true worth of the vehicle because of the high miles.

That's way too low. You need to fight them tooth an nail and get more money. Tell them that their numbers are outdated and that car used car prices are skyrocketing so fast that their figures based on research that may be a month or months old are extremely outdated and low.

On carvonka there is a $23k 2015 prius, low miles but nonetheless CRAZY
I sold my 2015 w/35k to them few months ago for over $17k, and it sold on their site for $21k in pre-order stage!

@Stangar Hope you do get compensated for your loss, replacement cost in this current market is super crazy high.

It doesn’t matter if the other car had insurance. The other car’s driver had to have insurance. The accident was their liability… UNLESS they can prove that the hit and run driver caused it. Did they sustain rear end damage?

As long as you have a police report with the other driver’s named, your insurance company will go to that driver’s insurance company. And if they were uninsured, that’s where uninsured motorist coverage kicks in.

We’ve had experience like that, got hit, the other guy doesn’t file a claim, is hard to even find, then when the insurers start digging it comes out that the other driver isn’t the owner, the actual owner is in-the-dark about the accident, and so on it goes.

Or: got hit, but wondering why the heck the other guy didn’t brake, was going full tilt. Then the insurers start digging, and it turns out the guy has four injury claims on the go, in the last year…

RoyRose: In Denver (the Arapahoe dealership) they now have two 2016's for sale. One is a Prius 3 with 74,000 miles and asking $18.5k and the other is a Prius 4 with only 30,800 miles and going for $22.5k. The 2nd one is the better deal but, still, a new 2021 Prius is just around $30 so might as well get those new batteries and engine with the 10 year warranty.

Thanks. Had I really not loved this car it would be easier to take and when you throw in that she had so much life left in her it’s extra hard. I am very grateful I wasn’t injured. Could have been really bad.
    Time for a drink.
