    Hello

I remember reading some where that there was a recall on the plastic intake manifold for the gen 3 Prius as there was a design flaw that caused Oil Vapour to pool below the throttle body and cause Engine Knock

    T-SB-0010-12

I have not seen the Updated and improved Intake manifold but I am going to go and buy one today
are there any glaringly obvious changes to the design of the intake manifold that will make it easy for me to spot that I am buy the new and improved intake manifold

I know the part number for the improved intake manifold is
    NEW and improved PART NUMBER

    17120-37052

    OLD PART NUMBERS ARE
    17120-37050
    17120-37051

I ask as the place I buy Prius parts from seem to think there was no such Update to the design !

I know that EGR admission passage inside IM is not straight like in old IM. It has some shapes inside, like U or something.

Actually, I'm looking for a 17120-37054 version of the intake manifold, that's the latest version with a "tournament design", where 1 splits into 2, which splits into 4 passages.

My 2011 has a 17120-37050 intake which has that straight EGR passage straight across the inside of the intake manifold that splits into 4 passages, but most of the flow goes down to the far end of the straight passage before exiting through the 4th passage, and then the 3rd passage, leaving very little EGR gases to exit the first two passages. This means that the lower combustion temperatures that the mixing in of the EGR gases is uneven.

The TSB also involves applying a software update to the ECU that controls the opening of the EGR valve. I'm not sure whether the Toyota service techs will be willing to apply the update, if you are not experiencing specific trouble/error codes though.

Keep me informed if you are successful in installing the updated intake manifold and software update.

    There's an updated T-SB-0103-12

MIL "ON" DTC P2111 and P0A0F After Cold Soak

17120-37054 is actually listed as a previous part #. The new one is 17120-37091. IF the current part # is 17120-37090 it also includes the proper modification. Part # is "on top of intake runner #4"...

    EDIT-

    Old part #s include:
    17120-37050
    17120-37051
    17120-37052
    17120-37053
    17120-37054

    Affected models:
    Prius '10-'15
    Prius v '12-'16
    Prius PHV '12-'15

Supposedly this corrects a failure to start at ambient temps below 23 F (-5 C).

    T-SB-0027-16

MIL "ON" DTC P0401 and/or Rattle After Cold Soak addresses knock like behavior described as:

..."vibration due to rough idle and/or tapping noise from the HV transaxle at cold start. Check Engine light may illuminate w/ DTC P0401 (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected). Excess carbon build up at the valve assembly results in valve sticking causing engine RPM to fluctuate."

    New EGR Valve parts:
    04004-58137
    25685-37010

    Affected models:

    Prius PHV '10, '12
    Prius v '12
    Prius '10-'12

There is an emissions label for CA (both T-SBs list it) which I did not install either:. 00451-00001-LBL . I just flashed the ECU. . Pretty sure I'm in the state where it matters the most but we'll see what happens next time I go get a smog check....

Huh. I think I had missed that one. T-SB-0103-12 Rev2. New nine years ago wait ... ok, revised in March 2014. Seven years ago September 2016. Five years ago.

Now I wonder what this magical mystical 17120-37091 manifold looks like.

I flashed last winter/fall the T--SB is updated as of Sept 8, 2016. I assume it is the latest because my subscription was so. There's a Copyright on the bottom of each and every one of the 10 pages otherwise I may have already scanned and posted...

My bad, I assumed the link found at NHTSA would be current, and it is, but I used Google to find it, and Google still pointed to the Rev1 version, which is also still there.

I've corrected the link in #5. Rev2 does seem to be the latest one. :)

I think Toyota concluded that the old manifold and programming:

"may display a MIL "ON" condition with DTCs P2111 (Throttle Actuator Control System) and P0A0F (Engine Failed to Start) present with ambient below 23 F. Intake manifold improved and ECM logic updated to decrease this occurrence."

No mention of engine knock of any sort. You may want to look into the EGR, the design is different need to unravel some wire insulation/wrap and rewrap so the connection can be made.

(I had knock one morning in the 40s F and so when I subscribed to try to program a 5th TPMS and failed I looked T-SBs up).

My 2 cents: just clean the one you have; save your money.

and look into Oil Catch Can’s. More info in my signature, I think in the Exhaust Gas Recirculation cleaning link.

I just purchased a 17120-37054 intake from a CT200h on Ebay. It will replace my 17120-37050 with straight EGR main passage. Coming from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

I'll install it and see if I can get my local Toyota service to apply the EGR programming update.

Oil catch can already installed, PCV valve relocated to vertical position between catch can outlet and intake manifold. It's catching approximately one teaspoon of clean, clear oil per week. Knowing that's not going to the intake and through the combustion process is a good feeling.

Are you thinking due to the revised intake? Is that a thing?

The TSB linked in #5 advocates 17120-37091 for the intake manifold and 34715700 as the ECM calibration (for a 2010 liftback, other cal #s for other models and years).

So no recalibration required if installing 17120-37054 intake manifold?

That's grouped in the older style intake I'm afraid. (I was hoping to catch you before you ordered the part. Argh. Sorry). I did flash the new programming onto the old intake and old EGR with no apparent bad effect. At least from what I recall (not home at the moment) the same calibration is used for both TS-Bs, whether you have one or both done....

I don't think anybody outside of Toyota knows what the firmware update actually does: whether it adjusts for some difference resulting from the changed manifold or changed EGR valve, or whether it just manages the engine in some improved way they think will also improve the symptoms in question.

Back when I only knew about the update as a companion to the EGR valve replacement, I assumed it was something related to which valve was installed. But that seems less likely now that I see it's the same version whether you change the manifold and not the valve, or the valve and not the manifold, or both things.

Apparently, the intake manifold mentioned in the TSB for part number ending in 17120-37091 actually contains an intake manifold stamped with part number 17120-37054. So there may not actually be an intake manifold stamped with the 17120-37090 or 17120-37091 part number after all, as mentioned in the thread link below?

Well, color me disappointed. I started cleaning out the 17120-37054 intake manifold, and lo and behold, my long brush goes all the way through the main EGR passage from the side, just like it does on my OEM intake manifold, part number 17120-37050.

I was under the impression that Toyota had "redisigned" the intake passages to a tournament design. Well it might well be for the air intake passages, but apparently, not for the EGR gases coming from the cooler.

It is the uneven distribution of the EGR gases that supposedly gunks up the piston rings, etc.

It does seem that the small EGR holes, next to the block intakes at cylinder 1/2 is more heavily fouled with the EGR funk, same as with the OEM 17120-37050 intake I cleaned previously. 20210930_113657.jpeg 20210930_114653.jpeg

So if we need a new manifold, is it really any better to get the new one vs. the old one?
