Fixing a blown head gasket in 2010 Prius. I have already put the timing cover back on and timing chain links aligned in there respective position (intake ⬆️ and exhaust cam at around 2 o,clock) with the orange color links. I notice that the yellow indicator on the pulley wheel is not aligned to 0 or near it on the timing valve cover. I have a new timing chain tensior that I’m going to install. My question is, can I turn the crank for a few revolutions without the timing chain tensioner in to get it to TDC? or do i need to install the timing chain tensioner then proceed to rotate the engine in irdeyto get it to TDC? I’m asking because I’m thinking that if the tensioner is not installed there will be no slack and turning the engine would be easier but it would skip a tooth because of the slack. Trying to get this to TDC but not liking the way the crank shaft pulley isn’t aligned with the 0 on the timing cover. I’m thinking that I may need to take off the timing cover again and start from there, not sure?

I am editing my post, as looking more closely, the orange link is at all three timing marks. It shouldn’t be physically possible to have all three marks at the orange links and things be installed wrong.

My new advice, install the balancer, and rotate the crankshaft with a wrench SLOWLY a couple of revolutions, obviously without spark plugs in. If you feel resistance, then go back. It’s some 35-37 revolutions to get back to the three orange links back to the original locations.

Update: Came back to say that I did figure It out. Turned the crank a few revolutions and now everything is aligned at TDC.

    Thanks for your reply
