I apologize if this has been covered before; I could not find any info.
Why do most of my CDs show no title or track list? I thought perhaps only the newest CDs would work. Or maybe it's a feature that CDs in the future could utilize. But, I've only found one of my CDs that displays title and track list. (And it's from 7 years ago!) On this old cd, the songs show individually, but the track list button is grayed out. (?)
Then, I thought a custom CD that I had burned from iTunes would show the songs. But, that didn't work either. So, what controls this? Is it just up to the CD manufacturer whether or not to incorporate this feature?

It is due to the way the CD is made by the record company. They embed the titles in the files, but a lot of times, this isn't done.

That information has to be encoded on the cd which most older cd's do not. The cd's you burn can easily have that information.

How can I do this with my own custom CDs that I burn? I thought iTunes (for Mac) would include it. But, it didn't come through.
    Thanks!

As others have suggested, this track information must be recorded on the disc for it to appear, and most commercial CDs do not have it, which is pretty ridiculous. It is called CD-TEXT.

Some burning software supports recording this layer of information to your disc, I believe Nero supports it, though I have never tried it personally.

Alternately, if your system supports MP3s (which I believe it should...?), then that will be way better anyway. ;)

Now, if only we could see this information while in motion.......

But you can... if you install a nice little speed sensor wire bypass switch!

Yes, it is frustrating that you have the technology to read the cd text but yes most cds made today simply do not provide it.

Now, to your use of iTunes. I have been successful in creating an mp3 formatted cd using iTunes. You must use a "Play List" for this to work, I believe. Simply go to the prefs area and configure iTunes to make mp3 cds when you burn them. Then create a playlist of the songs you wish to burn. Switch to the playlist in iTunes and then click the "burn" button to create your cd. As if my magic iTunes will make your cd and when you take it to your mp3 cd player in the Prius it will show all the track info.

Unfortunately when the car is moving Toyota takes away our ability to switch to that view. Another reason I put in the modification which breaks the wire which tells the Prius I am moving. See my signature for links to how the modification was done.

    Hope that helps.

EDIT: correction about what you are prevented from seeing while the Prius is moving. The ability to select a different music folder is greyed out normally when the car is moving. The mod I use gives it back to me.

The commercial CD case or CD should have the word "CD-TEXT" on it. If it doesn't, chances are it won't show the title.

if you're burning your own CD, make sure to check the box that says "CD-TEXT" or "write CD info" or similar

Must be an 06 thing. My 05 shows CD-TEXT while in motion. It doesn't show RDS though. Looks like Toyota locked both out for 06.

If I remember correctly, The CD Text option is new to iTunes, so be sure to grab version 7. By default, CD Text is disabled in Itunes. Go to preferences, then click on advanced and then click on Burning. You can then check off the "Include CD Text" option. While you're there you can take out the default 2 second gap between songs. This only applies to CD's in Audio format. As others have mentioned, you can cram a lot more onto a CD in mp3 format at the sacrifice of some audio quality.

When I buy a CD I usually make a copy of it with Nero on my PC which can usually find the track listing on the web and then add the CD Text to my burned copy. I don't like leaving originals in my car.

I would like to add that there are two CD-TEXT specifications so even if a disc is encoded with CD-TEXT information it may not appear on the MFD.

iTunes 7.0 uses one type of encoding and my 2005 Prius (standard audio system) reads the other, so no CD information appears. My friend has a 2006 with the 6 disc changer and the info appears for the same disc. So YMMV.

I have not done any tests with iTunes 7.01. But I have been making discs for the car for years with Toast (for the Mac). It always works, I suspect because it encodes CD-TEXT using both specs. I make copies of my commercial discs for the car and leave the originals safe and sound at home.

I believe that Nero can burn discs with CD-TEXT on Windows, but I can't say for sure since I only use that OS for work.

I can confirm both are indeed locked out on '06. <_<

I will probably look into doing the wire-cutting solution to get by this (and more-so for NAV) once the basic warranty is up, which will be about a year from now, based on the mileage I do. ;) I'm hoping someone figures out the software override before then, which I would prefer to cutting wires. I have an 2006 and I can read the CD info while driving. I only have found one CD that has the data encoded (the remastered Born to Run) - but I get the song titles while under way.

Hmmm... on further thought, I may have been mixing that up in my mind with MP3 ID3 tags. Those definitely do not appear while moving. In fact, now that I think about it I don't think I've tried a CD-TEXT disc, since I keep all my discs as MP3 in the car instead (had a radio stolen once with a CD in the drive and I was annoyed and decided not to keep original albums in the car anymore).

Now I'll need to find a disc in my collection that has CD-TEXT (that'll take a while) and try it out! :)

I think the whole cd-text idea was developed by sony. Music companies have to pay a royality to Sony to incorporate cd-text in to the cds, so, very few companies do it. An easy way to display cd-text is to rip your cd to your computer. Then burn the cd using Nero (I have version 6). There is a screen that asks you if you want cd-text and you type in the album title. Each song's name will then appear on the screen when it is playing. So, I only have burned cd's in my '04. If someone breaks into my car and steals my music, I can simply burn another copy! Good luck

My info is intermittent. Some the track list is lit up, other times it's grey'd out. I'll keep an eye on it for the next few days and see if there's a pattern, but while sitting still I could access the information on all CD's, even those with no track information.

UPDATE: The other day as I left the house I had a CD playing. The track list was lit up, but when I went over 4-5 MPH it grey'd out. I slowed down and it came back on. I did this several times and got the same result, so I guess it's a Prius-thing. Don't know how 'Actual Mileage' is able to read his while driving without cutting that wire. Anyway, I understand what's going on now. Funny thing is, when I told the dealership about it, they didn't mention this. LOL

My '07 does the same thing. I have TEXT built in to nearly all my CD's. When stopped, I can read titles to all tracks. But soon as I hit exactly 5mph, they grey out. Does anybody have any idea why Toyota would do that? I get that some phone functions are prohibited when moving - but to block out CD titles? That's dumb. Someone must know "what were they thinking???" Thanks.
