MFD blew fuse

I have a 2013 Prius V with the 57011 version MFD. About two months ago the MFD went out and I had found that it blew the fuse. After I replaced the fuse the system worked fine. Then a week later the 12v battery died, so being a 2013 I just decided to go ahead and replace it.

Again, about a week later the battery was dead so I pulled the MFD fuse and recharged the battery. The battery has not died since then (about 3 weeks now). So presumably there is a problem with the MFD. Having searched the net for answers, I haven't found anyone else report this same problem. I did examine all of the wiring as best I could and did not find any chafing, rodent damage or abnormal wear.

So I'm looking at replacing the MFD with a used unit off of Ebay. I have only found one 57011, everything else is the 57010. The 57010 units are about $100 cheaper. So my question is, can I install the Harmon expansion box onto the 57010 and get the same functionality as the 57011?

    Thanks,
    Steve

Short answer, you can install a 57010, but it won't use the expansion box. You would lose HD-Radio, Navigation, and Sirius XM. IIRC, you will still have Bluetooth, USB, and non-HD radio. You will not have Navigation, or maps of any kind.

If that is acceptable, go for a 57010. Alternately, I have a working 57011 that I replaced when I upgraded to a 510057 "Facelift" Unit (not a trivial upgrade). I also have the 57010 that came with my 2013 Prius V two.

Some important considerations about buying 57011 on eBay:

    - Since the expansion boxes often go dead, you may be buying a dead expansion box.
    - Since the expansion boxes often go dead, you may be buying a 57011 without an expansion box. The Harman 86100-yy050 expansion boxes fit most Toyota MFDs of similar years, so they often get sold off separately if they work.
    - Often, eBay sellers don't include the 86842-yy030 jumper cable. You might be able to re-use your old one, but the fact that it is missing could mean the seller never tested the unit.

We don't know if it is the 57011 MFD, or the expansion box that is causing your battery drain. You could test this by removing the big fat jumper cable that connects the two boxes, and monitoring if the battery draw changes. You can still use your 57011 unit without the cable connected, just limited to Bluetooth and non-HD radio.

I was hoping to get $100 + actual shipping for my 57011. Since I don't ship things very often, I do not have a postage subscription to bring the shipping cost down. My unit has all its plastic mounting tabs intact, and only very minor scuffs. I know the expansion box worked when I pulled it in August of 2021. I never used the Sirius XM part of the unit, so I cannot 100% vouch that feature works (My Prius v two does not have a Sat antenna). I updated the firmware in both boxes to the latest back in January 2018.

Oddly, we just had this happen. The 57011 started throwing ‘System Not Installed’ errors and Bluetooth connections failed after switching from iPhone 8 to iPhone 14, and connecting the 14 on an Apple charge/data cable to the USB Jack. What fuse did you change? Thanks.
