4th gen fill hole is roughly same location as 3rd. Excerpt from 4'th gen manual:

I think both 3rd and 4th do have a third bolt on the top?

just thinking that top bolt is higher and it being the fill hole allows for more trans fluid. Just making sure im not short changing the trans fluid.

Just try to put in the right amount. Significantly over filling trans fluid may cause frothing (like steamed milk?) And slippage.

If you’ve got the reg (on the side) fill bolt off, and the car level, you can’t go wrong. :)

They're constant mesh gears. If they "slip", it's only gonna be once......

What gets me is how they expect anyone to know that the fluid level is so many mm from the lower edge of the hole. Probably most people just fill until it starts spilling out. I didn't want to deal with spilled fluid, so poured in whatever amount the repair manual said (IIRC, 3.6 quarts). I didn't bother checking the level.

Filling till it starts coming back out is an easy way to get it right on spec. Pour in 3 qts/liters with gusto, then go maybe 100 cc at a time, and have a drain pan under. Not that difficult. I used a funnel and hose from above, had a helper pouring.

It's funny, Repair Manual neglects to say, but pretty sure you need the car level. I'm guessing DIY'rs are not no Toyota's radar, they picture this being done in a shop with a full lift. They should say though I think. Ok, they DO say "stop the vehicle on a flat road", which is just a little absurd, but at least makes the point:

Also, they mention to recheck after driving. Seriously? Button it all up, go for a drive, then back on the lift, top bolt out again? I actually did that the first time; total waste of time: level hadn't budged...

I didn't have anyone helping, and bending down to check for leaking fluid gets old real fast, so I just poured in the 3.6 quarts and went with it.
I had the sense to put the car up on 4 jack stands, which ended up being absurdly problematic. I don't plan on doing the transmission fluid again!

Using a fluid transfer pump on the fill hole on the side has the added benefit of being right there to see when the fluid starts coming out. Remove tube, re-insert plug. Boom. Done.

I've done this....it's as easy as a differential fluid change! My only advise is to keep an eye on how much comes out then when you refill you should get the same amount back in. Using a tube to refill can sometimes act like it's full and stuff is flowing out so make sure you have at least 1/4 of a cup or so come out to ensure it's really full. If it's level, it's impossible to overfill but is possible to underfill.

Geez, I do that every fall and spring for tire rotations, not sure why you'd have problems. My drill, just incase something jumps out at you:

    1. Chock rear wheels front and aft, then release parking brake.
    2. Raise front with floor jack at front/centre jacking point.
    3. Settle onto jack stands*.
    4. Raise rear with floor jack at rear/centre jack point.
    5. Settle onto jack stands*.

    * I DON'T like the proscribed scissor jack support points, seem like skittish knife edges. Go with these points instead:

Well you would, if I had actually posted the write up I promised in my thread about it.

Jacking up my car from the rear jack point all the way up was still not high enough for me to fit jack stands at the appointed locations on their lowest setting. I guess my jack just didn't go high enough. I ended up jacking up one side and placing 1 jack stand, then doing the other. The problem is that you can't do that and still be able to fit fit both the jack and the jack stand at the recommended position. I ended up bending the knife edge... OMG, what an ordeal. Then I had to reverse it. I don't want to remember!

I place my rear stands underneath the axle. Plenty of room for everything no matter which lift point you use.

I changed my transmission fluid by driving up on car ramps..so it was not level. It took all 4 quarts without spilling out due to the front being higher. I didn't worry about it and there has been no problem in the 16k miles since. I'm not expecting any problem in the future from it either.
I also used a funnel and tubing from above, under the hood, had a drain pan under but no spillage.

Yeah, the rear jack point in particular is up pretty high. I use a cheapie Samona 3-ton jack ($70 CDN, Boxing Day purchase, about 15 years back), has good lift.

    I like your add-ons.

I'm cheaper than you. I bought my floor jack and 2 jack stands off of Craigslist for $20 all together. I ain't spending 70 smackers on another jack, Canadian or otherwise!

Yep, I'm always extra-careful whenever putting cars on jacks. I have a floor jack, four thick rubber drive-up ramps, and four adjustable jack stands. A couple of my rules:
-Only jack the vehicle on a level, hard surface. (Almost always inside my 2-car garage)
-Some lift up vehicles on middle points of the vehicle but I don't like going up that high (which you have to do to get enough height for putting the stands in.) I lift from a firm frame part on the sides.
If I'm working on brakes or doing a tire rotation, I'll put tires I take off underneath the doors/frame as an extra safety measure. Before getting underneath the car, I'll push on the car from various corners to ensure she is not going anywhere.
Eric the Car Guy on Youtube has a good video....and The Car Care Nut said he's putting together a video, too...
