    Hi All!

I’m about to remove my stock radio in my gen2 9 speaker JBL in my Gen2 Touring Prius. Any one have tips/tricks/advice for doing a perfect install without loosing any functionality, such as retaining full steering wheel control, including HVAC controls, on-hook, off-hook control?

im trying to upgrade my Gen 2 with Apple Car Play.

    thanks!

    v/r,

    howard

I finally installed the AVH2550nex pioneer along with the metra Axxess JBL amp control and the ASWC-1 steering wheel control. I had Best Buy do the install and they did a great job, thanks to the expert tech installer.

now, I want to add a Rockville RWCS10CA10” Sub/Amp combo and thinking where I want to place the Sub Level Control. I also want to add a combined USB and AUX Jack somewhere near the 12v under dash Plug-in. The Pioneer sounds so much better than the OEM Head Unit. I’m thinking of a quick disconnect for the Remote/Ground/+12v lines so I can move the sub in case I need to haul things in my hatchback.

Pictures will be coming. I am having the bass level control mounted in the box below the head unit and the usb/aux dongle into the center console.

How clearly can you see the screen in the sun? I installed another Pioneer model and I can't see the screen when the sun is out. Thanks

The display seems fine in the sunlight. The only difficulty I have is reading the radio frequency at the bottom, which is actually hard to see without the sun. I had Best Buy do the install and had them mount a usb/aux cable Jack in the box between the seats. I also added a Rockville 10” sub in the hatch and it adds a lot to the low audio end. I fashioned a “quick disconnect” onto the sub so I could remove it when I haul something, like bags of compost or mulch. I didn’t loose any functionality from what I had previously. I can even use the old dvd map in the MFD, although there is no sound. Hope that helps!

On some pioneer models you can change the color palate the of the various screens and lights which improves visibility under certain lighting conditions.

I realize this advice is too late now but Rockville makes an awesome circular sub (looks like a roomba vacuum) that fits inside the spare tire. Perfect for a gen 2 or any vehicle with the spare inside the vehicle (aka not a truck). It has quick disconnects if one needs to access the spare. It’s very powerful and can dominate the soundstage so the controller and its location are important.

Yeah, we have a NEX model in our prime and it has a color option that’s very close to the stock lighting. Nice.

I did see that, but chose to get the rws10 sun. I was worried about vibrations and buzzing from things in the trunk with the spare tire sub. The RWS 10 works out perfectly for me and provides plenty of low end sound!

you can change the colors on the 2550NEX and I’ve done that. It’s a very nice receiver and plays Spotify and pandora through Bluetooth flawlessly, as far as I’m concerned. Also, I like listening to public radio, and the pioneer has two custom settings to adjust frequencies, and I’ve adjusted one of them to eliminate most of the bass for listening to voice audio and it works very well!

If been looking at this head unit. Can you add a custom picture for a background for this model? What Backup Camera did you go with?

I didn’t buy a new backup camera, but used the one installed stock in the Prius Gen2, and the image shows up on the multi function display (MFD), like it always did
When the car is shifted into reverse.

I don't know if this interests you but I just installed this chinese stereo and it's really plug and play. You have the option to connect the stock camera into there as well if you fancy that but I don't see why you would go for the extra trouble. This unit is really impressive.

Your chinese stereo may not find much interest without first telling us the make and model # of the product that you installed.

Or you could start a new thread.

The reason why I did not immediately send a link was so I wouldn't confuse anyone coming here from the actual stereo (the pioneer one) that was being referred by the OP.

I mentioned it because I believe it can be a better solution and was asking if it was relevant for the person in question.

Regardless, this is the stereo listing ive purchased. There you can pick from the different models for the one that fits your needs best. All of them come with the necessary trim pieces, wire harnesses and resistors pre installed for a plug and play solution. I've personally went for the QT10 for android auto + carplay.

WOW. I checked out that link. Very nice unit. I like the idea of adding extra cameras for the 360 camera feature.

I completed my installation yesterday (Had to rewire a backup camera and so on) and I am super happy so far.
The unit functions fast and well. However, I don't like the stock theming that the insist you using but as it is android you can easily get around it and install different themes and launchers yourself. Another drawback that i've seen is that very few apps such as Discord don't launch. This was the only app i've seen not working but I thought i'd mention for a potential buyer. Other than that everything works well.
