New Prius Owner :) - permanent license plate assigned? :(

    I just purchased a 2007 black Prius (pckg#2) this morning... am very very happy right now!!! Love the computerization of everything, the color, the new smell, etc. etc. :D

    I just have one major question:
    So I went over to the CA DMV website and was going to fill out a REG 1000 form (like every good hov commuter wannabe) but noticed in red lettering The vehicle must have a permanent license plate assigned before a sticker can be issued.

    1. Does this mean that I have to wait for actual physical plates to arrive in the mail before I can apply for the clean air stickers?
    2. If I only have to wait for a plate to be assigned, how would I know this without actually receiving plates in the mail?
    3. When can I actually submit the REG 1000 form?

    Ok, I found out the answers direct from the DMV... so hopefully this info will help anyone who might have the same question someday:

    It takes 2-3 weeks for a plate number to be assigned to a newly purchased car (one that's never had a plate # assigned to it before). You can call the DMV way before the physical plates arrive (or 2-3 weeks after purchase), get the plate number, and enter that info on the HOV sticker application, then mail it in and wait for the 'golden tickets' to arrive in the mail!

    Do they really make you put the stickers on your rear fenders, rather than on your windows? :unsure:

    I got My new 2007 Silver last week and mailed the HOV sticker application. I came to know that they would be mailing out stickers only after January. Is that correct?

    HighBreed: I think they're still sending out stickers, according to some of the more recent updates on other forums, and it looks like they bumped it up to 85,000 stickers (at least rumor has it) before the Jan07 legislation takes effect.

    Warwind: Yep, on the bumpers...

    I also confirmed that sticker applications sent to the DMV without an assigned license plate number will be rejected and sent back.

    If the dealer is sending in your DMV license registration, they can take their time, so it would be a good idea to speak directly to the DMV person at your dealer and ask if they can expedite your application... I'm going to be doing this on monday!!!

    Press your dealer. Tell them that the HOV sticker were a selling point. Some people have cut the time to less than a week for the tags. There is a different thread that's about 30 pages long that other CA owners have posted their shortcuts. You only need the plate info. Also, watch out in some counties you also need to get a "Fastrak" transponder.
