2022 Prius, Prius Prime Safety Recall 21TA07

i think they recalled all the 22's. they have had this problem on and off for over 20 years. this was my first recall in 2004.

Come on, man, saying that is like when somebody tags onto a thread where some warning lights were on and says "hey I have the exact same problem!" because the same lights were on.

There was a past recall I knew about where a power transistor failing happened to trigger the ECU to call for a shutdown.

There was a later one where the firmware had been changed to not shut down when the transistor failed ... but in certain driving conditions, after the transistor failed, a key voltage would rise and the ECU would say "hey, that voltage is above limits!" and call for a shutdown.

This one seems to be about the shifter position: if you happen to be moving the shifter at the exact moment the ECU wants to know what the position is, it can conclude the position sensor is faulty, and call for a shutdown.

(I don't know more details, but in the generations I know about, the shifter sends two redundant signals, so if the ECU hasn't converted both from analog to digital at the same instant, I could see this happening.)

So there have been different issues over the years that all could lead, in their own ways, to an unexpected shutdown, but it doesn't seem like lumping them together as "this problem off and on" will help anybody's understanding.

 

Just joined the forum. I just found and bought a new 2022 Prius Hybrid LE and the day I completed the sale the recall came out. I did not know it at the time and put about 700 miles on the car the first weekend I bought it. The car drives great and I am happy I picked the Prius over the Ioniq I also test drove. I am happy with the car and hoping the fix comes out in November.

 

FYI, I got an alert on the car that the dealer had the software update and took it in. They did the update in about two hours.
