New acquisition, HELP! Won’t respond to power up.

    Hey kids, so I snagged a ‘04 Gen 2 real cheap (longish story, I’ll go into detail later). Supposedly the traction battery is gone. Short story shorter, I charged up the 12V battery to see what works and what doesn’t. So the headlights work, the locks respond to the FOB buttons, hazards, interior lights, horn. BUT when I press the power button…. Nothing. It’s like the power butting is disconnected. Any ideas? Where do I start? HELP

    Do you have a reading on the 12v battery, maybe it's really dead? If there are no dash lights, your combination meter may just be bad.

    The 12 V battery does NOT actually start the gas engine.

    The first thing you need to do is understand the basics about how the system works.

    Then.....by "gone" do you mean that the traction battery has been removed......or that it is just worn out ?
    It is the traction battery that actually starts the engine.

    I’m not trying to start the engine, I’m just trying to get the system to start. And by gone I mean run flat. Anyway I’ve been chatting with a friend and it looks like it is a FOB issue. Stay tuned…..

    Fob? You plug the fob into the car, doesn’t need anything else

    So you have a display but no ready light do your headlights immediately go dim when you put them on or you holding steady low beam not going dim very fast or if you have your low beams on and you measure across the low the positive and negative of the battery you should not drop below 10 volts if you do the battery is pretty much not very good

    Not trying to be a dick here but did

    actually no. I swapped the guts to another case only to find out that the old case has an RFID chip that the car needs. I put the guts back in the old case and it works again.

    The RFID chip comes out the front of the case when you split it properly I put new cases on my '09 and there are the guts and the board that hold the battery and the little RFID chip right to the side or below it but you've got to crack the remote open correctly to get it out in the new case you buy like on eBay or Amazon not the Toyota one there's a place where that RFID chip sits if you buy the silver logoed fob I bought two and I changed over the RFID chips and the circuit board from my old remote which were a pain in the nice person to get a part and they work flawlessly well pretty much flawlessly it's not the fobs fault it's the cars
