Insurance covers your loss. If you lost an OEM you should be compensated for that loss. It is up to you how to spend the compensation for the damages.
Most insurance however don’t pay directly until after the repairs are done, with check made payable to both the shop and the insured.
If insurers were smart they should welcome an aftermarket replacement but then that would become the basis for any subsequent loss.

 

A lot also depends on whether or not there is a lien on the car. You are much more likely to get a check, if you have no lien on the car.

 

Read your insurance policy. If you back into a tree and Dent the car the insurance company compensates you for your loss. If you decide to go buy some new shoes and never fix the car, That’s up to you.

Consumers misunderstanding of insurance just makes this whole cat thing even worse

 

Well I was thinking, if you had multiple cat thefts and claims, replaced with cheap cat after first time, but didn’t divulge that with the subsequent theft claims. But: my logic was flakey, as long as the thieves see it’s aftermarket they leave it be?

 

After the third claim in a year or so, you’re likely to be told to find a new insurer.
