Hi. I am having a problem with an occasional and recurring P1116. 2009 with 149k mi. The MIL seems to happen when the car has sat for several days without driving. After a couple of drive cycles, the MIL turns off but P1116 stays as a current code.

I have read the threads about bleeding air and checking the coolant hose routing from the 3-way valve. I got a few air bubbles after cycling the CHST pump and opening the bleeder on the top of the radiator. It seems like the coolant in the CHST probably cools down after a few days of sitting, then I get the MIL on with P1116. What I find confusing is that eventually this cool down will happen, so why should this trigger the MIL? Maybe it's supposed to trigger a pending code and then clear on the next drive cycle?

I am wondering if the engine warm-up and thermostat behavior are normal. I usually don't drive on the highway and the engine temp seems to max out at around 167F. I took the car on the highway a couple days ago and the temp seemed to oscillate between 178F and 187F. Ambient temp in the high 40s. The heat seems to be ok also.

    Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks. I had been thinking the code was set when coolant was flowing out at startup, but it seems like it’s related to what is happening when hot coolant is being recovered.

Coming back to this thread almost 2 years later--haven't been driving the car much so I was living with the occasional check engine relating to the CHS. I finally got it solved--the hoses on the bottom of the tank and the pump were swapped. The CHS had been replaced at some point due to front bumper damage and apparently connected wrong (stupid body shop). Also the hose from the bottom of the coolant control valve was kinked due to being connected wrong. Got a new hose and it's working fine now after coolant bleeding.

Now that I have that fixed, I have a new problem. Fuel tank barely accepting any fuel. I tried to fill slowly and it overflowed onto the ground. The tank kept pushing fuel out so I let it push a little out and then put the cap on. How likely is it that I damaged something with the overfill? I searched the forum and it seems like there isn't a great solution to this fuel tank baffle problem.

It's difficult for a DIY person to diagnose this kind of problem without some of the specialized equipment a repair shop has. In order to fill the fuel bladder, air in the tank around the bladder has to be able to vent out. If something in the vent path is restricted, then the bladder can't expand very much. A shop would connect a machine that makes smoke at 1/2 psi pressure to the fuel tank, then start unplugging bits on the fuel evaporative emissions system until they locate the part that prevents proper venting.

I have a DIY smoke machine. Where does the area outside the bladder vent? Seems like if I inject smoke inside the tank that won’t show a problem with the area outside the tank/bladder not venting. I thought the issue was that the bladder gets too stiff to expand as it ages, but please let me know if I missed something about how to fix this.

Although this is all getting off-topic for a thread about P1116, the onboard refueling vapor recovery system looks like this:

It is quite common for overfilling to get liquid fuel into the passages of the system that need to be able to pass vapor while the tank is being filled, and it can cause the exact behavior you describe.

For more details in a thread that's not about the coolant valve, you can follow along in this one.

(That was kind of a weird thread, as the person was a habitual tank-topper-offer and didn't want to change that, and so paid for repairs and got the problem fixed and then started another pretty much identical thread eight months later.)
