Prius now available with no wait

Shortage of popular gas-electric cars eases, but demand is cooling, report says.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Prius shortage is finally over, according to a report published Monday.

Production of the popular gas-electric hybrid manufactured by Toyota (Charts) has caught up to meet buyer demand for the first time since the car went on sale in October 2003, USA Today reported.

Citing company estimates, the report said a Prius now sits on a dealer lot an average 17 days, up from five or six days a few months ago.

But the increase in production comes as demand for the car is slowing, the newspaper said.

U.S. Prius sales tumbled 12 percent in October, the newspaper said, citing reports from Autodata. Sales are down 1.4 percent for the year.

Reduced tax credits and lower gas prices are part of the reason behind the slowing demand, USA Today said.

Increased competition has also played a role. Honda (Charts) offers a hybrid in in its Civic line and Nissan also sells a hybrid, the newspaper said.

Ford (Charts) has also gotten into the hybrid business, while General Motors (Charts) and DaimlerChrysler's (Charts) Chrysler arm have lagged competitors.

:) Prius available in North Texas (Dallas area) without a wait. Packages from basic to Package 6 in a variety of colors. A couple of area dealers are still trying to get "market adjustment" over MSRP but are fast learning that is not longer feasible.

My Touring 2007 is due in a few days - I waited about 3 weeks to get the Package 6 Touring with the Options I wanted. I managed a very good trade for my low-miles 2004 (Package 8 - about the same as a 2007 Package 5) plus >$500 discount over MSRP on the new 2007. The area dealers sales staff are still not completely up to speed on the Prius equipment and packages. I was assured that all leather was "port installed." I mentioned to the salesman that Package 6 was "Factory installed." Although he disagreed at first, while we were snooping, he checked and had to admit his error. We preferred the factory leather for what appeared to be a tighter fit and the leather-wrapped steering wheel. In our area, accepting "port installed" leathner omits a couple of other package items for which they add "Liquicell Comfort" - a thin pad installed under the leather.

There were three on the lot at Elway Toyota on E. Arapahoe Road this last Sunday. Black, Silver, and Gray.

Not surprisingly, big pickup and SUV sales are rebounding in a manner that's in direct correlation with Prius supply catching up with demand.

Frankly, I'm rather hopeful that Prius supply/demand stays that way up until the time the G3 Prius arrives (maybe in MY08) meaning, if some big speculated changes actually occur, I'll be able to get a better deal at trade-in time.

Port installed leather upgrade does not have armrest or steering wheel in leather. Mine did get the console cover in leather.

Unfortunantly few salesmen knew or know what comes on the new Prius. My salesman admitted none of their salemen actually knew, as they had not seen a 2007 until mine came in. Their paper work does not say exactly what is in a leather upgrade. Package #5 with leather upgrade just does not mention the steering wheel. so that item was pretty obvious.

PriusChat posters had told me what to expect. So I mentally resolved, I wasn't going to get the armrest and console leather. I did not want to wait 3 months, as several salesmen claimed it would take to get factory leather with Touring edition. I tried 10 dealers on my current Prius buy.

I will have to wait until I see someones factory leather is know the difference for sure. My port leather upgrade is diffinently more comfortable than my 2004 Prius cloth seats were.

I placed an order with our local auto broker for a 2007 "with everything." The Touring Silver 2007 arrived 5 days later. I've had the vehicle one week. Definitely a good choice with navigation, blue tooth, JBL sound, active rear view mirror. Just waiting to finish "fine tuning" the vehicle with Sirius satellite radio and a few other touches. I transferred floor matts and seat covers from the 2005.
