Hybrid Battery Not Charging

    Hi Everyone!

    I'm really stuck on this problem here.

    Vehicle: 2004 Prius

    Scanner Code P3190 Poor Engine Power

    Symptom: The vehicle is not starting
    Prescribed: Replaced MAF sensor and replaced Throttle body
    Result: Car starts

    Symptom: Low engine power and shutting off
    Prescription: Checked fuel pressure - 44psi, Checked cylinder (1-4) compression 140-146psi,
    Replaced spark plugs, head gasket test result is negative
    Result: no change in low engine power

    Symptom: Hybrid battery not charging, MG1 turning on, engine at idle RPM from 700 RPM - 1400 RPM with misfires. Misfires happening on cylinder 1 and 3 still. Hybrid battery depleting from 226Vdc to 204Vdc and shutting off.
    Prescription: Change fuel injectors
    Result: testing on 12/7/21 (TBD)

    Thoughts? Shift Leveler? ECM? Timing Belt?

    We may need a bit more on how this symptom came about, weather conditions, etc.
    How long did it actually run for? (it may not be running, and only spinning the engine in at attempt to start)
    Where did you purchase the plugs, and which part # are you using now? (have you tried reinstalling the old plugs?)
    Have you tried swapping the cops to see if the misfire follows?
    Do you have access to a grid charger, or an appropriate HV power supply?

    Just to clarify, there are only three (3) DTCs; P3190, P0301 and P0303?

    Which device are you using to retrieve the OBD2 codes?

    I'm still having issues with this Prius.
    - The camshaft is good
    - crankshaft is good
    - MAF is good
    - throttle body and motor is good

    I captured the voltage for #1 coil (in green) and fuel injection (in red) below.

    Here's the timing for a another vehicle (good Prius) with an engine that is not having power issues.

    Any thoughts? Is the computer timing off? Is the fuel injector off?

    Time is against you here. Every time you try to start the engine it is consuming more hybrid battery power. And at 204 volts I’m surprised it’s turning the engine over.

    I think you do not have a hybrid battery capable reader because I bet it’s throwing some hybrid codes. Right now your just shot gunning parts and that usually makes it worse.

    on the mfd the screen above the radio does it have an icon of a car in the upper left corner if so you have a bad hybrid battery.

    Hiw many miles on the car? That can’t be the original hybrid battery is it a whack a mole rebuilt battery?

    Get Dr Prius app it will pull hybrid codes and stop trying to start the engine till then because your very close to a dead hybrid battery and once that happens your screwed. It will not turn the engine over without a good hybrid battery.

    Also be aware there’s a fault mode you can have where the car has the red triangle of death from hybrid battery issues the car goes into limp mode so that when you try to start the engine it turns over but won’t start, the oddity is when the engine is turning over it’s really quiet and turning over slower than usual.
    It’s just turning over with no ignition.

    Thanks for your reply. I did forget to mention that I have a hybrid battery charger and the battery is juiced up to 230v. I also have no codes when starting up the vehicle. I have an autel which I can clear all the codes before attempting to start the vehicle. I’m measuring 50 psi when the engine tries to turn over. I added about 4 gallons of fuel to the vehicle and the car is dying and telling engine failed to start and I ran out of fuel. Bizarre!

    "i have no codes when starting up the vehicle, i have an autel which i can clear all the codes attempting to start the vehicle" :confused:

    Ah -let me clarify.

    In order to attempt to start the vehicle, the codes must be cleared from the horrible “engine did not start” code and all the Christmas lights on the dash.

    Once I start (attempt) the vehicle, the hybrid system attempts to start the engine but the engine doesn’t start. Background: the Prius electric motor is the starter for the combustion engine. If the engine doesn’t start within a few ~10 seconds then the electric engine (starter) will stop attempting to turn on the combustion engine. At this time the car will throw a fit and light up like a Christmas tree. It will tell you”engine did not start” and “no engine power.”

    In order to keep diagnosing the vehicle I have to clear all those codes in order to attempt to crank the engine again. I also have to be mindful of keeping the hv battery charged because when the electric system acts as a starter it uses hv battery voltage to do so.

    Still unknown if you ever swapped the coils around to see if the misfire follows.

    I would see if starting fluid keeps it going, which might require a second set of hands.

    Consider finding a different scanner, as that Autel may not be up for the job. You might have a DTC P0AA6 (aka P3009 on the 2004).

    Is the butterfly valve and throttle body clean? (a tooth brush dipped in some alcohol, it cleans up real fast)

    I didnt change the coils. I can easily try that. I did clean the throttle body and fly wheel.

    when I put in starter fluid I get a rough engine.

    How many miles are on this 2004?

    Try moving the #1 and #3 injectors over to #2 and #4, to see if the misfire follows.

    It might be time to upgrade the toolkit to include a for a mini-vci cable and techstream.

    IF the first pic (13-37-11) is your problem car, then why is the fuel injector on time so much shorter than the second pic? I might expect more fuel when the ECM is trying to start a (cold) engine.

    Might want do look at MAF, ECT, injector pulsewidth, load, and other data on a known good car (under similar conditions)- then see what your car does.

    1/31 diagnosis:
    Additional diagnosis performed:
    - checked fuel pressure again - 50 psi
    - checked air suction at throttle body - good hand suction at throttle body when putting palm over throttle body opening
    - removed injector connectors from all 4 injectors and added starter fluid through throttle body - car did not stay on. I've been told this would keep the car running as long as I keep injecting starter fluid in the throttle body.
    - removed coils and put a screwdriver in it then held screwdriver body about 1/2" away from engine cover to check for strong spark. Strong spark witnessed.


    I will generate the same graphs in addition to the camshaft sensor tomorrow (2/3).

    Here's a thought. Have your fuel gauge hooked up and then pressurize the system. Assuming that it holds pressure (doesn't leak down too quickly), then try to start the engine. See if pressure then drops as the engine tries to run. The idea is to see if the injectors are actually delivering fuel. IDK if there is a usable injector actuator test in your autel scantool that would let you perform an injector balance test.

    Don't know if you have a vacuum gauge handy (connect it to the line for the purge valve) I would want to see if there's an "obvious" valve sealing problem causing your misfires. Some faults might not affect compression readings but will cause misfires.

    Might need to learn how to capture ignition waveforms with your scope- practice on a good car then on your prius. A look "inside" the combustion chamber might tell us what's going on.

    2/3/22 diagnosis

    - I did perform the fuel pressure test during startup. Fuel pressure stays at 50psi.

    - Here are the captures I took today from the bad vehicle. I'll have to capture the good one tomorrow.

    I offset all data from 0, except spark #1, so you can see everything in one chart more clearly. Per spec, camshaft has three cycles per two crank engine revolution cycles. I'm too zoomed out since the crankshaft should look more sinusoidal.
