Help please asap! Prius showed signs of low oil but only at 2k mile interval (it's an 08 and I'm getting what I can out of it). anyway, I topped it off yesterday, probably more than I should have. Well this morning I go to drive and after 10 seconds it sounds like a motorcycle starting up and is getting increasingly louder. Honestly like a roaring sound. I stopped immediately, drained some oil, tried again, same thing. I'm not about to drive it today because it sounds like it could explode with me inside it! When I get home today I plan to do a full oil and filter change, but what could have caused this? Did I damage something?

Maybe you could look under the car and see if you still have a catalytic converter.

If you are still having other issues with your Prius give Steve a call in Phoenix, he can do mobile services, maybe a tuneup for reasonable price.

Theoretical: Overfilling the engine oil leads to a too high oil level. Then the crankshaft can reach the oil surface. The eccentric cranks hit the oil at high speed, like e.g. a man jumping into water from a height of 100 meters (or yards). This can cause physical damage to the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons and/or their bearings.
I wonder if this is what happened. IDK. Hopefully not! Good luck!

What were the "signs of low oil" and where was the oil on the dipstick after filling it?

it was up wayyy past, probably a good 8-10 inches. I drained it out but I'm doing a whole new oil drain, change, and new oil filter too tonight. Hopefully this fixes it?

A few days ago I got into my Prius and was rewarded with very very loud exhaust noise. As in "no muffler or pipes at all."

A quick look underneath revealed both catalytic converters were GONE. The wires for the O2 sensor were left dangling where they had been torn off. The 2 saw cuts where the cat had been cut out were surprisingly clean and square. These thieves not only had brand new saw blades but they also demonstrated the skill to make clean square cuts in a hurry

When I reported this to my local PD they said "We are chasing the catalytic converter thieves right now but we haven't caught up with them yet." They had already received reports of more than 20 catalytic converter thefts during the past 3 days. The town I live in (east central Ilinois) is not a "big city" by any means. But these cat thieves are working everywhere these days. It isn't just a "Los Angeles thing" now.

FYI, my local muffler/exhaust system shop recommends the aftermarket 2Gen Prius Cat sold by Rock Auto under the "Walker" brand. It is about $330. I'm ordering one today and also a new O2 sensor.

I've read that cat thieves know how to ID a genuine OEM Prius cat vs. an aftermarket cat. They won't steal aftermarket units because these aren't worth anything to the people they sell to. Only original Toyota OEM cats are valuable enough to merit stealing them. So I'm hoping replacement with the aftermarket unit will save me from future cat thefts.

Would the car make this sound if the oil was severely over filled too, or is this sound specific to the catalytic converter?

It sure sounds like your cat was stolen. Take a look underneath and you'll find out for sure.

So my neighbor found this under the car just a bit ago when looking. He said he thought it was from the exhaust. Any ideas?

Bolt and spring for catalytic converter. Attaches the cat converter to the exhaust manifold.

My neighbor said CC is still there. Said O2 sensor is loose and exhaust is loose.

Sounds like the thieves were interrupted and left your cat partially disconnected. Because damaged O2 sensor wires can short the computer it would be best not to turn this back on. Have it towed to a reliable Toyota mechanic for repairs. Definitely not whichever shop messed up the oil fill! Most likely they can put it back together, perhaps with a bit of welding. While there, have a cat shield installed.
