Got myself a Prius Prime Limited this week. Titanium Glow. MSRP plus $1,500 but minus the $1,500 current Toyota cash back — so it nets out at the regular MSRP number. That’s about as good a deal as you can get in SoCal right now unless you wait for some months with a dealer that doesn’t mark up — but no certainty there will be any cash back rebate when you eventually get your car, plus the federal tax credit will be expiring fairly soon. I think in some parts of the country you can get an MSRP deal and get to keep any rebate.

A question to those who know the car better than me. There are really three parts to the instrument display — the main display on the left (with the speed, etc.), the multi-information portion in the middle, and then the one starting with the gear selector info to the right (which I think can’t be customized). I’m finding it hard to get the multi-information one in the middle to show various types of info/graphics shown in the manual, as opposed to simply displaying menu items using the round control on the steering wheel. I can’t work out whether I am missing something. I’m not usually totally inept with equipment (I can fly a plane), but this is confusing me. What do seasoned Prime owners use the middle multi-informational display for? And are there any tips for customizing the display that might not be obvious from the manual?

Just to be clear, we use:

MID: Multi-Information Display - for the small 4.2" screen to the right of the speedo
MFD: Multi-Function Display - for the 7" or 11.6" screen with navigation (and audio and climate).

I assume you're talking about the MID to the right of the speedo?

I usually have the Hybrid System Indicator and I change the top right value from "Dist. to Empty" to "Battery %" as I have a HUD and I use that to display DTE on the battery. I do use it to display my kWh/100km Eco Diary (last menu item.. so I scroll up twice from the HSI to Eco Diary).

Don't forget you can scroll up/down as well as left/right in the MID to show sub-menus.

I personally think the console display is the most unintuitive feature on the Prime. I too am a Pilot. Through trial and error I have it where I want it. Basically ECO which is the way it probably comes from the factory. I rarely change it but if I am not sure what the current speed limit I use the steering wheel arrow button to go to the right for the current speed limit. I realize on my car that's not updated in real time but speed limits don't change that frequently around here.

The basic idea is to use the right hand 'round control ring' arrows to select things like car settings and speed limit. Then you click the middle of the round control thing to get to the sub menus. Once you tumble to that it works pretty well.

One tip, you likely already know this but I didn't, is the the round control ring on the steering wheel does not just change the MID display when you click it left or right, but also try up and down and suddenly you see many additional screens you can choose to display for each category type available on the MID. Maybe, like it did for me, this will help you.

Oooops, I now see that Tideland Prius above already said this. :)

There is a trick to the MID screens.
There are several that use the - (Trip button) Left side steering wheel - to display more screens than are available without cycling the (several trip meters available). Many of them are hard to understand even after seeing them multiple times since some of them look very similar to the previous screen using another trip meter. Confusing? Yep, sure is!

I'm the same except I don't have a HUD. But DTE is easy to check by toggling the trip meter button on the left of the steering wheel. The HSI display is by far the most useful most of the time, but I check other views quite often like the ECO history, speed limit, etc. After a quick check, it's back to the HSI.

I tend to mentally picture the MID display as a grid that I scroll around with the up-down and left-right buttons. Putting the car in READY and just playing with it for a while with the manual nearby for reference will make it pretty automatic for you in a little while.

You'll also find that the MID is where you reset the maintenance reminder after you rotate your tires and/or change your oil. WAY more logical than in previous generations.

Thank you for these replies — very helpful. One thing I realized after my initial post is that the far left portion can only be turned into a split-screen if you disable road-sign assist. At least on my generation of vehicle. Odd, but whatever.

Mine is old enough that it doesn't have road-sign assist. If it did have it, I'd disable it. I prefer to look for the signs outside of the car where the other cars are.
