    Doesn't my US Rav4 hybrid (non-plug-in) have a 2.5L ICE?

Yes it does, I didn't mean to imply it didn't.

A poster asked about possibly the 2L hybrid version instead of the 2.5L that is in your rav 4 hybrid. Toyota does make a system like that but only in europe so far. I believe lexus uses a 2L hybrid in the UX hybrid in the US, but it may be slightly different. 2L system in the European corrola and corrola cross hybrid produce 180 hp versus the rav4's 2.5L hybrid awd 219 hp. I don't really know if the 2L will get better fuel economy in a prius, but it may.

Isn't the 2.0L Hybrid also found in the C-HR Hybrid? The 2.0L Hybrid system puts out 135 kW (181 hp) vs the 90 kW (121 hp) of their 1.8L Hybrid C-HR. They put in a more powerful motor (I'm assuming MG2) of 80 kW (107 hp) as well as a bigger battery - more cells based on their description. The new Toyota C-HR

edited to clarify the 1.8L is 90 kW not 122 kW

What I got from the link above from drash for the 2020 European version of the C-HR
the 2.0 litre Hybrid Dynamic Force system -
    1.8 liter and a 1.2 Turbo / optional AWD)
first since for me the l/100km spec is hard to convert to mpg: the 5.3 l/100km listed converts to 45 mpg

    second: the 1.8 liter version uses Lithium - 207 volt - 56 cell at 3.7 volts each - while the 2.0 liter uses Nimh - 216 volt - 180 cell -15 blocks.

third to seventh: 2.0 Liter - 41% thermal efficient ICE - 14:1 compression ratio - dual VVT-i ( intake side is handled by VVT-iE electrically controlled ) - D-45 both direct and indirect injection - a new power control unit (PCU).

    GA-C platform
NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) handled by the new? vibration engineering specialty.

and some specs for the 1.2 liter turbo

    plus
    DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY specs.

Yup and reading on, the 1.8L C-HR Hybrid is identical to 2022 Prius with a 53 kW (71 hp) MG2 and Toyota swapped the 80 kW MG2 (as well as the 2.0L) from the UXh for the 2.0L C-HR Hybrid. Surprising the 2.0L puts out 112 kW (150 hp) for the C-HR Hybrid which is slightly more than the US C-HR 2.0L naturally aspirated non hybrid at 107 kW (144 hp). Europe's 2.0L C-HR Hybrid has the same 1.4 kWh battery as the UXh but the 1.8L has a 767 Wh battery. Might be looking at the next power train for the 2023 Prius and Prius Prime with the 2.0L and perhaps even a hybrid C-HR for the US.

That 2L in the North American market ch-r is the old design 10:1 compression and port but not direct injection, the new dynamic force has both types and 13:1 compression for non-hybrid with 125kw-131 kw. The european hybrid 2L uses the new hybrid version of the engine with 14:1 compression. It is likely this is a short term cost saving move and the American market will get the better engine design eventually.

America is usually last to get the best from Toyota.

That’s what they said about the Valvematic engine on the last gen Corolla and that never became widespread among the lineup. It wasn’t until this generation in 2019 that we finally got the valvematic engine. Of course by now, there’s the Dynamic Force family of engines.

It was an option last gen though. Along with the choice of something beside a 4 speed automatic. With the smaller cars, Toyota believes in trickle down for the North American market, and we'll like it.

I see the hatchback gets the 2.0L dynamic force engine. So the sedan should get it next gen. Maybe even the Cross will get it.

I know the Ioniq and Niro roll outs left NA last, but it was within a year or so of the cars being first released. It also meant we were the first to get the starter battery as part of the traction pack.

The fact is that the US's low fuel prices means the market for fuel saving technologies is small. Car companies make more profit off them elsewhere. Toyota stands out for having a fuel efficiency rep from their hybrids, but can be the least efficient in other segments *cough*pick ups*cough*
