Timing mess up

You'll have to remove the timing cover to be able to get it set correctly.

 

Some guys have opened it up three times to get the timing right

 

I’ve done the same thing. Replaced head gasket, then a P0016. I don’t have a tick/knock but I am getting the code, the engine is running fine, so I’m guessing that I’m off by very little. I’m trying to figure out how to do it properly before I redo it. Does anyone know of the vvt-i is supposed to be advanced or retarded when setting the chain? I’m having trouble finding a definitive answer. I’m working on a 2011. If it’s supposed to be advanced/retarded what is the procedure?

I don't see him rotating the engine to release the chain tensioner actuator though after re-installing it. Maybe its different than the Corolla.

He does the whole job in an hour not counting the sealer mess that took out the rad too.

 

I'm not convinced it would matter much, just because the timing marks are on the same part with the chain sprocket anyway. As long as those are lined up properly and the chain doesn't skip, the timing adjuster will just do its own thing.

The tensioner can also be released via long screwdriver if the valve cover is off.

 

The Repair Manual does say to do a slight counterclockwise rotation (opposite of normal rotation) to release the tensioner.
