Ah, OK, I thought it was a $35k car. If it's a $45k car, you may see its trade-in value in low to mid-$30ks after a year of use.

There aren't many BEVs with under $40K price tag. Leaf, Mini, Ioniq, Kona, and MX-30 are all I can come up with. Bolt and Bolt EUV are also under $40K if they start selling them again, but they no longer qualify for the tax credit. All newer and ones with longer range BEVs are over $40K. That being said, whatever the MRSP, a BEV with the current full tax credit and state incentive, I can get the price discounted by $9.5K. So, if the depreciation for the first year is within $10K, I am fine with purchasing it by selling my 2021 PP.

I fall in love with the bZ4x and plan to reserve one as soon as they are available, but without the tax credit, I will likely consider the Leaf as well, of perhaps try to trade in my 2021 for 2022 before July iif I can get break-even.

Yeah, trading my 2021 to a new 2022 PP is another option for me too. But with a small $1500 rebate and virtually no dealer discount, even if I find one at MSRP, the best I can get would be $7K off (including our $1K state incentive). With $7K off, I may be losing money if I decide to sell it again within a few years. If that is the case, I am much more inclined to trade my 2021 PP to a 2022 Rav4 Prime to get $8.5K off. Far better car and usability than PP, although again, it does not save me on operational cost over the PP.

If you think you would lose money with a Prius Prime, you would be up for a shock with anything else.

Not really. PP has only a $4500 tax credit. Rav4Prime and all BEVs have a $7500 tax credit. That's a huge difference. Since the only reason, I would want a new PP over a Rav4Prime is money saving characteristic of PP, losing money on the PP when I want to sell it would be a deal-breaker for me to buy a new PP which is basically the same old boring but super-efficient commuter car unchanged from the last three PPs I have owned. If I get Rav4Prime, then it would be a keeper for the long term because of its reliability, utility, and performance. And if I buy a BEV, that would be a totally different experience altogether. With a BEV, I am not going for the money-saving (or profit-making) feature of PP or the utility and convenience of the Rav4Prime, but rather going for the 100% emission-free daily drive which by itself has a different value than money saved or utility a vehicle provides.

Prius is the least-depreciating Toyota model, and Toyota is the least-depreciating car make. I expect anything else to depreciate a lot more, especially if they are more expensive vehicles. Even with a higher tax credit, they would probably be more costly. BEVs will depreciate even more.

Not according to this study. Prius doesn't even appear in the top 10. Besides, as I said repeatedly if I buy a BEV, I am not buying it to save money. I am buying it to save the EARTH. That is PRICELESS.

Interesting. BEVs are certainly rock-bottom on the list.

The Model S would be number 4 on the luxury car list. The Model X 6th of the luxury SUVs.

The Leaf and i3 are the only other BEVs listed in that article. One has a history poor battery life, and the other is a weird, little car that is also a luxury brand. It appears not enough 5 year old examples of other BEVs sold enough examples within the year or so of data iseecars lokked at.

After the first batteries started failing in high heat areas, Nissan switched chemistries to what is known as the lizard pack. The stuck with passive air cooling* though, and owners report capacity loss faster than in other BEVs.

Their new BEV model will have some type of liquid cooling.

*The newer Leafs with larger battery may have a fan.

Nissan is starting to take reservations for Ariya. But the first shipment does not arrive until late this year. I think they will also be getting very close to the current 30D IRS code limit of 200K vehicles. Currently, the lowest-priced Leaf S with a full credit is the only new BEV that can be had below $20K, and I am not seeing any markup on LEAF, at least not at my area dealers.

I stopped at a local Nissan dealer to have my current 2021 PP Ltd valuated. It came back very favorably at $30500. The best offer I have received so far is $32000 from Driveway, but if I take that offer, I can't get the sales tax discount on a new car purchase. $30500 for a dealer trade-in is a better deal by $168.

If I took the dealer offer and bought the 2022 Leaf S they had in stock, I would actually receive a check from the dealer for this trade. I really thought about pulling the trigger, but the base "S" model lacks a few features I really would like to have in my daily drive. I would much rather pay a bit more for the SV trim, so I did not take the deal.

$30,500?? That's really bad. KBB in my Zip code goes over $35,000. However, we always lose the sales tax here unless we are a dealer.

Trade-in value is regional, just like the sales price. Demands on PP have been always higher in CA than in NE. And currently, it is even more pronounced. Sound like you can't find a PP in your area without markup. I can easily find a PP at MSRP in my area with no markup. The supplies are low, so more work is required to find a car I want, but when there is one in the inventory, I can buy it at MSRP, no markup. This is the same for the very popular Rav4Prime.

The KBB value of my car in my zip is currently 30-32K for Trade-in. The offer I got from the dealer is right at the low end of the KBB range. My initial offers from Carvana and Vroom were much worse. It was almost like a joke. Carvana's offer was only $23K while Vroom's offer was $26K. The highest offer was from Driveway for $32K. But with those buyers, I don't get any sales tax break since I am not going to buy a used car from them. If I buy a car from the Nissan dealer who gave me an offer of $30500, the real price is actually $32200 because of the saving on the sales tax on the new Leaf purchased. So it is actually at the top end of the KBB.

You can't find a Prius Prime in my area—period. There are currently only one LE, one XLE, and no Limited trims listed in Southern California.

Obviously, in your region demand is much higher than the supply. That's what driving the higher used PP price ergo higher PP trade-in value on KBB. If anyone in CA wants to fly to ME and buy my PP Ltd for $35,000, I will come to pick you up at the airport. LOL

LOL Shipping is actually only about $1k. Perhaps you can find a buyer whom you can ship it to.

If the shipping PP coast to coast cost only $1000, then I will discount my sales price to $34,000. Any taker??? LOL
