I talked to the guy at the tire shop today about replacing my OEM tires. I have about 36K miles on them, the tread is getting low and winter is coming.

I asked about the Michelin MXV4+ recommended by a couple people here and he said they were crap, and many people have come in to get them off their car.

He recommended sticking with the Integrities, or for better traction going to the BFGoodrich Traction T/A. Anyone tried the Traction T/A? Do they affect MPG much?

Hey, I'm a Prius owner, I want good traction, but I don't want to take a hit on my MPG!!!

I think the Traction T/A is what I got about a year ago. I can't remember exactly, and I can't see my tires from my computer. The handling is about the same, maybe a slight improvement. My milage did take about a 5mpg hit, but only for about 1000-1500 miles while the tires were geting broken in. Now I'm back up at 50mpg. IMO they do just fine for the price I paid. Hope this helps.

Replaced our OEM Goodyear Integrities with Nokain WR winter-rated all-weather tires. Mileage not impacted from the tires, and based on prior experience with our Honda Accord, rain, snow, slush and gravel traction very good. I am aware that being in Northern NY near Canada, we're driving in such conditions more than most Prius owners due to the extended period of colder weather fall, winter and early spring. Nokians get a 'five star' rating in our family!

I sold tires in the early 80s, sometimes on a commission. I would never tell someone a given tire was "crap" (as an aside, that lack of professionalism would lead me to walk out), but I would steer buyers toward a tire that made me more money, assuming it met their needs. Frankly, that wasn't always a Michelin. Many dealers sold Michelin, so we usually had to discount them to be competitive. Therefore, profit margins (and commissions) were often lower. Not second-guessing your tire dealer, but his motivation for dissing the Michelin could be self-serving.

Besides, everything Michelin made then was top quality. I've been out of the business for over 20 years, so a lot could have changed. But I've heard nothing since then to suggest that. I've got a little less than 16K on my tires, so it will be awhile before I replace them. But I've already started gathering information and opinions about replacements, and the Michelin MXV4 and Hydroedge are among those I will be considering at replacement time.

I bought Traction TA's when I had to replace my OE Goodyears due to a run-in with a nasty pothole one night. I'd shopped on Tirerack for replacements, so knew that the TA was highest rated in it's category. That was last year, over 40k ago. I agree with the mileage hit, until they break in, but my mileage is back within a couple of mpg where it was originally. I do mostly highway miles, and normally am over 50mpg. I think I'll get another 30-40k out of these. They are very good in the rain, and with my limited snow experience (so far), they've been very good also. I like to keep them at 38 or 40psi front, 38 or 36 rear. Hope this helps in your decision.

I changed the Integritys to Goodyear Viva2s and dropped 2 mpgs. I am going back to the stock tires at approximately 70,000 miles.

Thanks for the feedback. The Traction TA's are even cheaper than the Integrity so I suppose as long as the mileage hit is temporary, and the traction is at least the same if not better, I'll go that route.
