Yesterday morning when I first got in my 06 Prius, the MFD, Clock and Radio were all blank. I checked all fuses and they were fine. On the fourth trip in the car (about noon), it all came back at startup. My guess is a bad circuit board connection that when the car warmed up, it worked.
Any other ideas? or has anyone else experienced this?

Did you see Galaxee's sticky thread at the top of the Care & Mainenance forums?

Apparently, enough people have had trouble with their MFD's that she has arranged to sell refurbished ones.

She reports that the Toyota dealer wants $4,000 to replace the screen.

I don't know how to post links to her thread, but someone will come along shortly and help...

Check the 12-volt connections. I don't believe the clock is "attached" to the car in any way other than the 12-volt power.

    check the dome fuse.

can't give much other advice right now, don't have a wiring diagram.

and don't worry, that's not the mfd problem.

Interesting both mornings this has happened in the past two days, it is close to freezing but no freeze warning on the dash (little ice icon).
Wonder if this has something to do with it? All other dash icons work.
In the afternoons, all is fine. MFD, Radio and clock. They all come back when it warms up outside. Fuses all o.k. and Dome lights work BOTH times. No problems with Dome lights at either time.

Problems like this can be extremely difficult to diagnose... My old car ('97 Sunfire GT) had something similar with the 12V system... 6-10 times every winter i would start up the car, get about half a block and all of the electronics (radio, power steering, everything) would just go dead... leave it running to warm up, restart the car, and everything would work fine - but the dealer could never find the problem.

the 06 doesn't have the it's-cold-outside indicator. i'll try to get in touch with DH at work and see if he's got time to take a look at some of his materials at work.

Thanks for any help. It happened yesterday aftn (when it was warm) so I was going to the dealership first thing this A.M. On the way to the dealership this morning, all came back to normal. I went anyway but they told me unless there was an engine light (to set a code), they could not help me. I will have to catch it when it happens at the dealership.

Latest is I took it to the dealership and they have supposedly found the problem. It is the junction block behind the steering wheel on the driver's side of the car. Technician says it is a bad junction block with poor connections. I will repost if not the answer as I get the car back tomorrow. They had to order the part and it comes in tomorrow.

Whew!! $4,000 to replace the MFD screen? I've heard that Toyota combines the simple parts into very expensive assemblies and if one of those simple parts fails, you have to buy the whole assembly. Anyone else heard this? If Toyota is putting cars together this way, everyone else is probably doing it too. Toyota puts them together better than anyone else, but what a shock to be hit with a 4k repair bill on a car just out of warranty.

I had the same problem happen on my 2003 Accord. Honda replaced what they called a tuner assembly, which is behind the radio. It has 5 circuit boards in it and due to inadequate ventilation of the heat they burn out after a while. My radio, clock, and all info about heat/AC/temp. are all shown with the illuminated screen. It's not quite the same as the Prius, but it would have cost me about $800 if the dealer didn't do a N/C. Honda paid for it in full even though the car was just out of the 3 year time period. What saved me was the milege is only 33,000.

Good luck on your fix. It sounds logical to me.

What would have been the easiest to troubleshoot was the clock, as there isn't much to it. Dome fuse for B+ so the clock continually keeps time, ACC fuse to turn on the clock display, panel fuse to provide the dimming signal, and ground return for all three. All of these do go through connectors and junctions.

It's been a week and appears the car is fixed. I have not had another incident of blank MFD, Clock and no radio.
The dealership theorizes the connections were poor from new. Just started showing up now after 8k miles and 5 months.
I will update if there are further problems.

I just experienced the same issues.
Driving as per normal, entering freeway on ramp, NAV was on.
Not cold or hot day, no rain for the day, nothing out of the ordinary.
Then Nav, MFD, Clock, Radio - all dead.
Possibly slight bump (wife indicates there was a bump)
Double Checked all fuses from manual that may be linked, including DOME.
Thought is may be LockPick 3+ devices as NAV was affected. Actually removed all LockPick 3+ excep EV-mod - still no resolution.

Will take to dealer and suggest comments from PC.

    Hi Lloyd,

Have you checked the 7.5A ACC fuse? If that fuse is good then it is likely that you have a junction block problem as cited in post #9.

    System back online again.
It was the 7.5a ACC fuse. #24 under the dash.
I had pulled this one (and almost all the others) an did a visual check - but none had an obvious burnout.
I finally started swapping out each type with a new 'good fuse' and finally found the right one.

    NAV system history still intact.
Bluetooth, Speed Dial, Phone book still intact
    MPG history - M.I.A :(

fyi - when you play around with the fuses you may eventually get the Red Triangle of Death alert when restarting the system.
Remember - don't panic, shut down and restart 3 or more times and usually the alert goes away.
