So far been doing all I can and learned quite a bit on this form. It looks like I have bad preignition when the engine is idling for extended time or when accelerating up a hill. I think this is what may have caused the head gasket to go out years ago. I noticed on my scanner the temperature gauge spikes rapidly when preignition starts to occur. If I give the Prius hard acceleration it goes away. High octane fuel reduces the noise almost completely. The noise is always worse in hot weather. Cleaning the intake reduces the noise temporarily. Additives hide the noise for a while. I am not sure what can be causing this noise. It dose burn oil. I am thinking it has to do with PVC system as there is a great deal of blow by. Can I bypass this? New spark plugs did not help. I had 1 spark plug break from this noise in the past. I can change the fuel injectors if needed.

Does it happen with all brands, not octanes of gasoline?

There is no warning lamps or check engine light during this problem?

That doesn't sound like preignition to me, but I haven't heard preignition in a Prius yet for comparison. Is it that clicking noise you are talking about?

with cheaper 87 oct it gets worse. 89 and above helps make the noise go away no matter the brand

I am going to try shell 87.

No codes. i will post a new video a longer one

After getting the odometer to turn on it has 287,788 miles. I can’t believe it still has the same transmission fluid. changing it this weekend.

I was watching a journeyman Toyota mechanic’s YouTube video a few weeks ago that I also posted in PC, about changing fluids to maximize car life. He said that it’s important to change transmission fluid regularly at 60k to 100k miles and if you don’t it may not be noticeable until you do change it and the years of crud that accumulated in the transmission now is no longer there and the transmission starts slipping.

Sounds like information more pertinent to a standard auto transmission than the PSD on a Prius. Changing the trans fluid on a Prius will not harm the transaxle in any way.

Yes, I was incorrect, was speaking generically and you are correct regarding fluid change on Prius transmissions. I misremembered the tip. Generally the crud helps keep clutches engaged but the Prius has none. He says that in the video as I rewatched the relevant portion.
He does say that changing it periodically is advised but the risk that a conventional transmission might encounter at a too long change interval up to a point is not applicable to Prius’s.
    This is the video link

He has other information that may be of interest as well on keeping your Toyota running past 200k miles
I change mine every at least every 100k anyway.

    Update #1

Car stopped the pinging noise after using Shell and chevron 89 octane. Min octane in my areas is 87. Also noticed a small increase in power. I am debating if I should replace the knock sensor. At idle after 30 minutes on diagnostic mode it started to pour blue smoke out of the tail pipe. I am thinking valve seals or guides? After a long idle on diagnostic mode then shut off, the next time I turn on the car a very large blue smoke comes out the muffler. I doubt it is the piston rings. I noticed that the temperature rises to 213F then goes back down to 200. Is this too hot for a Prius? It has no thermostat(it was modified to stay open)
