Toyota part numbers for the G3/G4 head gaskets are different. FelPro part number for both gens is the same. Mine had zero issues the 3 1/2 years that I owned it. The current owner is reporting 55 mpg on his 70 mile one way commute to work. I believe part of that is my engine was technically a Gen 3, after the head swap. Even those people after me who made the necessary changes to use the G4 head have reported no issues,

If you are getting cam sensor code, the sensor is likely bad. If the code you are getting is cam/crank correlation, then the timing is off.

I’m sorry I’m still a little confused . You had a gen 4 block with a gen 3 head with gen 4 parts in the head correct? Oh and good news it started running and the cam error went away and now I have a misfire in #4 cylinder and the gen 4 water pump needs replaced.

When I bought the Gen 4 engine, the yard that I bought it from took off the EGR valve, manifolds, and EGR cooler, along with other small misc parts. They offered to sell those parts back to me for another $300. It was a three hour trip back to them to go get the parts they stripped. I chose to rebuild my Gen 3 head with the valves, springs, cams, etc from the Gen 4 head, rather then configure the coolant hoses and such to work with the Gen 4 head on the engine.

So do you think using Gen 4 parts in a gen 3 head on a gen 4 block solved the problem people were having because it kept the original heater hose configuration or because it kept the timing as a gen 3 would have it. I’m considering doing it the way you did because it seems like it’s more like a timing issue everybody seems to be having problems with water pumps and codes that I never had any of those problems with on the previous GEN 3 . Now considering I just swapped over the same sensors to the Gen 4 engine it seems likely it has to be an ECM issue and that’s why your version of the swap seems to make more sense. But on the other hand how could it be possible that a gen 3 three cylinder head with Gen 4 parts camshaft and lifters and springs could possibly make the timing more like a GEN three? Did you ever have Error codes before you did that swap on your cylinder head? I’d really like to narrow it down before I decide to go and do this it sounds more logical but then again with hybrid cars and their computers you never know. What do you think?

The Gen 4 engine never started and ran in my car as Toyota assembled it. As I was missing the EGR, manifolds, and EGR cooler, I took it apart and put my Gen 3 head on it. In my research into putting the Gen 4 engine into the Gen 3, I was already relatively certain that the only difference in the two generations of engine was the head casting and how the water outlet connected to the head. The valves, cams, and springs are all common to all Toyota 1.8 engines. Cam sprockets and VVT solenoids are Atkinson-cycle specific.

I believe that if someone wanted to, it’s possible to get a Corolla non-hybrid 1.8 to run in a Prius. People have put the Yaris cams on the Gen 2 heads, and that effectively has them Yaris powered Priuses.
