I bought my first Prius this year. How many miles can you typically expect to get before it dies?

    I'd agree, except that gen 4 seems to have upped the ante on tech, in-dash screens, sculpted fairing and lights, all the fancy/fragile stuff that costs a mint to replace.

    If I had $8k to buy a Prius, I would not be able to find a gen4. I would have to choose between a gen2 or a gen3. I would buy the best gen2. Best would mean it had a replacement hv battery in the last few years and a brake booster.

    One cali dealer has the Prius Prime pack listed for $11.k - and amayama has the same (part #) listed for $6.k with no guarantee of fitment since the models are Prius PHV.. amayama also has the 5 battery banks listed for $1.k each. I also noticed the part #'s are different for (17-18 Prius Prime all trims) and (19 -21 Prius Prime all trims).

    The sensors on the door knobs work by sensing your touch. They can be fooled if you spray water on them while the fob is near. They think you are commanding the door to lock or unlock, and beep to confirm that they have done it.

    If you’re worried about repairs once the factory warranty expires, you could consider an extended warranty that would give you piece of mind for a long while to come.

    I love to use sitting in one place. Then I heard cab company's that use prius don't turn them off at all for months at a time. So fascinating. On a side note, I think my 1st Gen plug in 3rd Gen prius is ticklish. It beeps at my when I'm scrubbing it at the car wash.

    I strongly suggest the Toyota "Extended Warranty/Service Plan".
    Ihmo, for ~$200/year (if you drive less than 10K miles/year), you'll get 10 years of not worrying about expensive repair bills (at least, very unlikely on a Prius / Prius-Prime).

    You can get the extended warranty contract from any Toyota dealership. There are a few that specialize in interweb extended service contracts. Just do a Google search.
    Imho, I suggest you ask your local dealership. Most times, they will come close.

    Fwiw, get the Toyota extended warranty only.

    You should've bought a Ford Mach-E.
    No problems with the doors locking or unlocking on their own.
    Or, with the fob, or smart phone, or...
    ;-)

    I recently heard The Car Care Nut (master Toyota technician at a dealership) saying he recently saw some 2016 and 2017 Prius' in for service with 300,000 miles (they are taxis) which is good news.
    If you take care of a Toyota (regular maintenance) they will take care of you! My family, in Maine, is still driving Toyota's built in the 90's and early 2000's! (Avalon, Tundra, Highlander) Here, we have a 2008 Corolla and 2012 Sienna still running great.

    My guess would be needing a large repair that people just don't want to pay for. I got mine from a mechanic friend who bought it from an owner that was going to have to put a second battery in it. They just didn't want to spend the money again, and bought something else. Had he not have bought it, it probably would have gone to pick n pull or something. Also as cars get to the 10 year mark, being in even minor accidents can total the vehicle, so a lot end up going away for really very repairable damage. Of course, in the current market, that is not as big an issue and going forward more cars will be repaired that even a few years ago would have gone to the scrap yard.

    I’m currently over 190,000 miles on a 2010 Prius. We meant to replace it at ten years, but it was doing so well we didn’t. Then the pandemic hit, and supply chain issues, and inflation, and now is a very bad time to be car shopping. I hope I can keep it running for a little while longer…
