You are not alone. I have not opened my 2021 PP's hood often enough. Just a few days ago, I opened it to check the oil and wash fluid, only to find out mice had started to make a home under the hood. Yeah, I should have checked it more often.

Later, I also discovered that the mice had found their way into the cabin via the air vent opening under the wiper cowl cover panel. The cabin air filter was destroyed. So far, I have not found electrical or mechanical damage to the car, but I am in process of remedying the problem.

There is no "start-stop load" on Prius. The 12V simply provides power to boot the computers and close the connection to the high-voltage traction battery. It is this large battery that powers the motor generators that spin the ICE

On the contrary. The deputy told us to stay in the car when we started to get out because cars were ignoring the emergency vehicles and blasting past at 60 MPH or more about three feet away from us. We endured the increasing fumes for about two minutes. Even with the glass blown out of the hatch and both back doors it was unbreathable in there. Not damaging our lungs was our only concern at the moment. When you can't breathe, you don't care about anything else.

As long as the sealed battery inside the car is intact, it won't burn your lungs. And with a shattered wet battery under the hood, you might get some fumes depending on wind direction but the source of the fumes is outside the car.

Edit to add that I just saw your comments about the mice. YIKES!! Glad you spotted it before they got int o the wiring.

    Well. Now I know.

I feel like a dope admitting this to you all but I have left the charger plugged in for entire weekends here and there bc I was not around - - but no more.

Now I’m going to be adamant about unplugging the charger ASAP when it’s fully charged. Damn. This explains a little as I always felt my 2020 Prime 12v battery was a bit “temperamental” - so to speak

140R and H4 are not true fits. Only LN1 is the correct size. 140R and H4 may not fit securely because of small differences in shapes. Moreover, LN1 has a higher reserve capacity/Ah rating than 140R and H4.

So, basically the only true fits are the Toyota OEM battery and the ACDelco AGM battery.

    LN1: 8-1/8" L x 7-1/2" H x 7" W, (OE Yuasa battery 295 CCA, 20 AH)
    BCI 140R: 8-1/4" L x 7-1/2" H x 6-7/8" W, ( O'Reilly;s 445 CCA)
    H4: 10-7/8" L x 7-1/2" H x 6-7/8 W (Interstate 480 CCA) (If the length is accurate then this won't fit)
    ACDelco LN1AGM 8.2 x 7.5 x 6.9 inches, (560 CCA)

Note that various sources show different sizes for the same battery. For example, Rock Auto's ACDelco has the length and width mixed. Duralast has their H4 width at 5 inches...if right it's way different from Interstate--who knows?

As I said, don't mess with the American BCI 140R or German DIN H4. Go with the European Union EN LN1. It will not only have the correct size but also the correct Ah. Prius Prime is already known to be hard on the battery, and installing an American- or German-standard battery with less Ah capacity will result in more frequent dead batteries.

ACDelco AGM is made by at least two different manufactures. According to Consumer Reports tests, one of them seems to be excellent and the other one seems to be poor. Perhaps take a chance and order one from Summit Racing.

Ironically, the battery available at Toyota is a TrueStart DIN H4 size. So, Toyota itself is not following their own specs on the auxiliary battery.

How is the PP hard on the 12v battery?

It is hard in terms of parasitic drain. You need a battery with a good reserve-capacity Ah rating so that the battery doesn't discharge and die. The LN1 battery has a higher Ah rating than the 140R and H4.

It looks like the only European-Union-standard EN LN1 battery available is the ACDelco AGM LN1, as Toyota is not selling an OEM EN LN1. AGM batteries also survive deep discharges better. Therefore, this is a no-brainer: go with the ACDelco AGM LN1 if you need a battery replacement.

Does European-Union-standard EN LN1 specify the reserve-capacity Ah rating? I thought the standards are only for the sizing. I certainly find the same American BCI number batteries with different specs for CCA and presumably different reserve-capacity Ah ratings.

I based it on the manufacturer specs I could find. Sometimes, you need to convert reserve capacity in minutes to Ah capacity, which could be tricky.

If you read the top label, the ACDelco AGM LN1 is rated 50 Ah, which is 11% higher than the 45-Ah minimum Toyota requires and the OEM battery has:

So, it is not the European-Union-standard EN LN1 standard perse that makes it superior. Certainly, there may be an American BCI 140R or German DIN H4 labeled battery that has better specs than an OEM Yuasa LN1 battery or AC Delco AGM LN1 battery.

My DieHard Gold H4 flooded battery is rated at 50 AH. However, the AGM Delco battery is at a lower price than what I paid and AGM batteries are better. At the time, I couldn't find any replacement battery locally except the DieHard.

Anyway, it looks like the ACDelco is the only AGM EN LN1 battery available.

It appears that most 140R and H4 batteries are 50-Ah or a little higher, and they should be OK. This one has 52 Ah, but it's not AGM:

This must not be a popular sized battery, at least in the US. Costco doesn't carry it, unfortunately. Too bad Toyota didn't use a more common size.
