(I've searched other posts, and my owner's manual on this). On one post, it was mentioned that "the Prius tech was not aware of the manual trunk release location". Is there such a thing??? I have a 2006 with option pkg #8. <_<

Yeah, it's behind a panel on the driver's(?) side of the back end. It's definitely in MY owner's manual (2004), but I don't know the page number. It's probably not indexed well, so I'm sure that's why it's hard to find.

There's a close-up photo of it here, in the USER-GUIDE on page 37.

Would that be my post? lol.

The manual release is near the latch on the inside. Open your hatch, fold the false floor and look for a cover in the black bin on the bumper side of the car. Remove that black plastic cover and the manual release is there. If you use your fingers to feel for it, they may get greasy as there is grease near the latch if you accidentally touch that. But since you have the hatch open, just use a torch and look for the release. It's quite short (small)

Thanks guys---I found the manual release. But, I'm still a little puzzled. Let's see if I have this right:

So, if my smart key goes kaput, the batteries are dead (no electrical power whatsoever), and I want to open the trunk, I'd use my manual key to open the driver's door, then crawl in the back seat, lower the seat back, uncover the manual release lever, and pull it up to open the trunk???

My 2001 Echo has a remote trunk release next to the fuel filler door left of the driver's seat, and another manual release lever (big yellow one, with nothing to uncover) right inside the trunk lid itself. Also, I can use my key to open the trunk lid.

Just seems a little strange to me. I wish they had a key slot in the trunk lid, like on the driver's door. <_<

So... what are the odds of that actually ever happening? Needing stuff in back that can't be removed via the side doors while at the same time having a dead 12-volt battery isn't very likely.

By the way, you do know that unlocking the hatch is also possible by pushing the button on the door. Right?

No need to crawl into the back. First thing to do is to use jump leads to start the car from the fuse-box at the front. The manual shows you what to do. But the fuse box can be difficult to open if you haven't done it before. Incidentally, don't keep your jump leads in the back (trunk)!

It might still be a torch if all your batteries are dead! :D

Of course, you're right (John 1701A.). To be honest, I'm trying to find something I don't like about this car, but it's tough. :) BTW, thanks for the advice on the jumper cables. I do have them in the trunk now, but will relocate them to under the hood somewhere.

Neat thing about the Prius is you don't need heavy gauge jumper cables. Even #16 - #14 gauge will do. So they can be small and light. They only carry an amp or so. Just take care not to connect them backwards. ;)

minus the "stuff", I actually had that happen.

My battery went dead in a parkade. My nose was facing the wall and the tow truck guy insisted on "direct access to the battery" so I had to fold the rear seats down, climb in, undo the cargo net, remove the cargo mat, fold the floor, remove the plastic cover and flick the manual release.

The catch is that you have to have someone lift the hatch while you release otherwise, the hatch may fall back and latch itself.

<_< In the Section 5 Emergency area of my 2007 Owner's Manual, manual release of the hatch is covered with illustrations. Page 376. It is not indexed insofar as I could find.

Due to the very poor Index of the Toyota Owner's Manuals, I have started my own "Index" on a blank page in the back of the manual - same as I did with my 2004. Saved me a "bunch" of page turns trying to find the information I needed, or re-find it to share with PriusChat folks.

By "button" I guess that poster means the handle you grip on the hatch to open it when the 12v battery is charged. The "button" is what you feel when you press on the flexible cover of the exterior handle to open the hatch normally. This thread deals with MANUAL opening of the hatch when you do not have 12v battery power - an EMERGENCY procedure.

Thanks -- I thought I had missed something there!

That manual release would be pretty hard to get to in an emergency! Plus, how would one ever remember?

Okay, I got to make a set of jumper cables with speaker wire tonight and put alligator clips on it!

Well, you certainly answered my question. (Thanks!) Some clearly don't know. So I will definitely be adding the following tip to the User-Guide:

If you want to unlock the hatch while the system is on (which disables the remote) or just want another method of access, push the lock/unlock button for the side doors (on the inside, next to the window controls). Doing that also unlocks the hatch.

    :) John...

And once again... THANKS[!!] for your easy-to-read American English User Guides.

I have programmed my new 2007 Touring Edition Prius (as I had previously done with my 2004) to open all doors AND THE HATCH when I touch the driver's side door handle. Your edit of your User Guide will help clarify Prius "door/hatch" opening.

Ain't the Prius a fascinating collection of technology? Damned Clever, Toyota! Just wish they would hire a native English speaker to write their Manuals. It seems necessary sometimes to read, re-read, then think "DUH??" to understand what the Manual is trying to say. Not as bad as some computer manuals a few years ago, though.

Hey Charles, why not just post your index? I started my own, but you've probably got some other things indexed that I've forgotten were in there. Thanks!
