That's only true for Toyota. Then again they are one of the bigger voices for using batteries for hybrids over plug ins.

If you want the battery supply to grow, there needs to be demand to it. Is the hybrid market large enough on its own to do this, or do we need the sales of large battery BEVs to get it going?

*The study that supported using smaller batteries over more cars conclusion for the best use of batteries for carbon emission reduction was to put them in diesel mild hybrids.

Didn’t the AWD model outsell the other (non-prime) models though?

Easiest way for Toyota to sell NiMH, or they were saving Li-ion for the BEVs.

So the same reasons “cars” don’t sell?

Only trucks and SUVs are produced

The Prius L Eco is the only trim with a Lithium battery and as far as I know the AWD-e model outsells the rest by about 3 to 1 around here.

Europe sold less than 500 total of any kind of Prius during the first 3 months of the year including the Prius Plug-in Hybrid as its known there.

Still believe they are going to cancel the C-HR in the US as they sold less than 4300 here the 1st quarter of 2022 - a 59% drop off from the previous year. I think they’ll make the Prius more like the C-HR except a touch bigger than the current C-HR which is almost 9 inches shorter than the standard Prius and over 11 inches shorter than the Prime. BTW the C-HR looks like a coupe which is why a lot of the rumor sites say it’ll be a “coupe style” while others say it’ll be a “mini RAV4”. The Corolla Cross will still be gas only for a while in the US.

Looks like all the FWD trims are Li-ion on Toyota's site right now. I remember the LE being NiMH once. Toyota went with Li-ion pack that was easy to swap for the NiMH one, so can change it depending on supply. They've done so with the Rav4h, with half of one year getting Li-ion.

Yeah, the Eco got it to be as light as possible, and the 3 and 4 got it to counter the weight gain of added features. I thought with the switch away from numbers, the LE would be getting NiMH, but that isn't the case now. The once available to the public plain L used NiMH.

All models for Europe got NiMH. AWD has it for cold weather performance.

I’ve often wondered how the lithium Prius ECO handles the battery in -40F weather.

Does it just shut down any charge/ discharge cycles?

Does it have some means of warming the battery?

all good questions. i have never seen any complaints here, and there have been plenty of pips in cold areas for 10 years now.

First - it's rare to find even - 20°f in populations of any kind of density. Many diesel & gasser have a difficult time just starting in that kind of cold.
    But - 50°f ?? That's a rarity upon another rarity.
Even so, hybrids warm their batteries just like they warm their occupants, using waste heat. Even several plugins use waste heat to warm their batteries. As for totally electric - different battery chemistries do worse in uber freezing temps. That's why frigid area electric car owners keep them plugged in - similar to a block heater plug station in many parking lots - for gasers.

I saw it as useful for towing. The extra torque getting everything moving off the line.
