Hi! I had this same thing just happen to me. 2013 Prius Plug-in. Just bought the car and didn't notice the odometer is stuck at 98464. The TRIP A and TRIP B work just fine though!

Any help would be appreciated. I checked other threads, but I haven't seen many with this particular situation.

    Thanks!

Appreciate the reply, bisco. Bummed to hear that the seller may have tampered with that system but it is what it is. Dr. Prius has the battery life at ~84% still which is great and overall I'm pretty happy with the purchase, minus this one issue.

I sent in replies to Texas Hybrid Batteries and I'll give Tampa Hybrids a call to see if they have any suggestions. I guess the other option would be to just get a new combination meter with the proper mileage and just restart the mileage now.

Curious though, could this be an issue with any mechanical parts of the odometer? Haven't worked on prius odometers at all, and I'm more used to the analog ones where if your odometer fails, likely your speedo and trip meters also don't work. That's not the case here as both my trip meters and speedo works and is accurate.

    Appreciate the input!

The only mechanical parts of the digital odometer would be the gearing in the transmission and the size of the tires. The car's ECU calculates distance travelled based on gearing, speed, and stock tire size and then displays that information digitally on the dash.

Understood! This is why it's particularly strange to me that the Trip Meters, Speedometer work just fine **but** the odometer for total miles traveled display is stuck on 98,464. To me it seems like it must be a software or display glitch, since the other components of the system are working properly.

The car should've been smogged. You can access DMV smog histories through their web site (dmv.ca.gov); also check the Carfax. If the car was serviced at any nationwide chain garage; the service history should show mileage - so you'll get an idea how long and estimate how many more miles is actually on the car. Based on mileage and time between oil changes; project forward from there.

    Hope this helps.....

It's very difficult to prove that someone did this on purpose; but unscrupulous car lots roll-back odometers all the time. The failure seems too precise; for this to be a random failure.

Just checked the Carfax and yikes, it's got a lot more miles than the 98k I thought it had. In Jan of '22 it was reported to have 205k miles! Feeling like I got taken for a ride, but not sure there's much I can do at this point. Happy to see that the battery seems to have held up as I get the full EPA estimated 11mi of plug-in only range, but a little disappointed in the integrity of some people.

    Ouch!! Sorry to hear that.
I wonder how the odometer backed itself down to 98,xxx miles, within the last five months. You've got circumstantial evidence, but no real proof who did this. Go back to the dealership and CALMLY ask for compensation/discount. If you purchased this from a private party; ditto - it doesn't hurt to ask. If this was the original owner or second owner - they should've disclosed. Licensed car dealerships, should've known and disclosed, mileage is in question - they do this for a living and have access to Carfax.

Take it to a mechanic for a used car pre-purchase inspection to see if there are any other surprises ($100-$200). Make sure there is a CARB certified catalytic converter on that car. If there isn't; that is one of the two things covered by Ca DMV laws that would void an as-is car sale. The other is brakes. Car owners can't sell a known unsafe, non-smogable car as road worthy; unless it is sold as a parts-only car. This law applies to both private party and dealers. If you bought the car as a parts only and as-is sale - Your out of luck...
Look at and carefully read your paperwork for this car, to see if you signed-off on any of the above.

    hope this helps....

Thanks for the reply, Biomed! Unfortunately, I bought private party - reached out to the guy yesterday afternoon and he said he'd get me the carfax but now I notice his phone is disconnected and he's no longer responding. I should have asked/checked the carfax before purchasing so I partly blame myself. I think I put too much faith in complete strangers sometimes lol.

I'm headed to the DMV shortly to see if there is any issue registering the vehicle, so fingers crossed I get through that without any other surprises. As I mentioned, the car seems in good shape and the battery is surprisingly healthy for having >200k miles on it. Lesson learned, though. I'll look into seeing what I can do to get the Odo fixed and i'll clock it to the latest mileage shown on the Carfax so that it can begin to resemble some level of honesty.

    Appreciate your input

in massachusetts, this is criminal, unless the title states that the odo is not working, signed by the seller.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal here in CA, too. Mostly just want to move past this, though - not sure I want to get into all the legal battles, but again, we'll see what the DMV says.

    Thanks!

Your going to need a valid smog certificate, less than 45-90 days old to legally register it. That's why I mentioned having a mechanic look at it.

Honest people are selling - giving away their cars; when the catalytic converter is stolen. They don't have full auto coverage or the money to legally fix it. That's where these low-life get the car legally; put some 'lip-stick on the pig' and resell for a hefty margin. An honest auto broker would take something like this to Nevada (non-CARB state); put a cheap non-CARB converter on it and legally sell it; without the odometer alterations.

    Sorry this happened to you.....

Thanks, Biomed! Yeah, the seller provided me with a smog certificate which took place just a couple days before selling, so that didn't seem fishy there. I should have checked the mileage on that smog cert since it matched the mileage that was stuck on the lifetime ODO. But yeah, it is what it is, I'm headed to the toyota dealership on Tuesday to get a full inspection on the prius just to make sure it's safe and good enough to keep driving. My partner has been driving it the last few days without any problems and happy to report the battery still gets 12-13mi of plug-in range.

Appreciate your sympathy lol, i mostly blame myself - scammers will always be around, and i should do better next time!
