Hm... I mean I was responding to ASMRDogman. The bot I'm referring to is Rhys Faulkner. We get bots as well on the other forums and they are always either copying and pasting posts or weirdly paraphrasing them with one of those word scramblers that people used in college to reduce the plagriarism markers in their papers. Mendel got it right.

Looks like your auto "correct" changed "hydro lock" to hydraulic. :D Why is it called "auto correct," anyway?

20K mile update on the V, car has been running great and returning decent MPG as well.

The 2010 Prius hatch has got 270k miles on the odo now, consuming 1 quart every 1000~1500 miles.

Head gasket seems to be holding fine for now but I need to rebuild the old engine and get it ready before the hatch quits on me.

I looked into getting a new motor for the hatch as well and do a gen4 swap but used engine prices have gone up at least 40% in my area if not more.

The gen4 engine for the V was around 1200 as far as I can recall, shipped from NV and had close to 90k miles on it. I cant get another one of these for that price now, range for an engine like this is close to $2k~2500 now.

Before I start rebuilding the old motor I need to find a source for Toyota Service manual. I understand that Toyota doesnt necessarily print hard copies and access is through the service portal. Since I do not have access to service portal does any one have an idea as to where I can get access to the service materials, specifically pertaining to engine rebuild, torque specs, tolerances etc?

One of the head gasket links in my signature has a bunch of Repair Manual excerpts. I think most everything you'll need. If you'd prefer to dig yourself, I can pm you a link.

The JDM engines are still in the price range you paid for the other engine you were talking about I just bought one the other week it's been a month or two now The transmission and engine out of a JDM car which is Japan domestic market car both pieces I paid $1454 and I think $200 delivered to my door I thought that was very good I paid a friend of mine $800 to pull my old engine and tranny and drop the new engine and tranny in He did not get the car running I did but he bolted everything up orange plugs inverter all of it I was in the middle of building a house and didn't have time so the whole job plus parts and everything wind up costing me about $2,200 maybe

I think I know exactly which shop you're talking about. The HG job isn't hard for someone with basic mechanical skills, tools, and can follow YouTube videos. You can do it

This being an engine rebuild thread; probably a good place for this:

I like the "turn it over with the crank position sensor unplugged to prime it" idea.

In the video (linked in #975) he mentions that any new short blocks being sold now have the “springier” piston rings.

So I have request from you guys. I have a friend with a 2010 Prius Touring. 265K miles. Car is making an awful racket on start up. Maintenance was never done and knowing the driver I am sure the HG is blown might have even thrown a rod. I've advised the driver that for $1,800 he can get a head job done but after reading through these threads. A $1,600 engine from JDM might be a better choice. So would you buy a Gen 3 with 45K miles on the motor or try a Gen 4 swap. He would have to find someone to have the work done. I told his to try and start the car every month or so and try to save his Hybrid battery while he saves up for a new engine. Buying a new Prius is clearly like 16K so not as effective. What you recommend? Save this car? Scrap it and sell the battery? Replace engine? if so which one? How do I find a good local installer? TIA

And then I find this Option
